Back in 1.0 I tried genetic modification on my entire species. Back then it turned out that the modified became a entirely new species and suddenly everyone was greatly unhappy since I played xenophobes and only had primary species as leaders. Not a great thing to realise when playing in Iron Man. Since then I've stayed away from genetic modifications.

But I like the idea of genetically improve an entire species so I checked recently to find out if it has been changed. And according to the wiki if you modify your primary species it now turns into a subspecies instead. What does this mean in terms of gameplay? Do the subspecies basicly count same as the primary species or are they still considered another species but with lower xenophobe and xenophile modifiers?

Tried reading on the wiki and patch notes but I didn't find the answer and the few threads I found just stated that it has changed. Not how it has changed.

Xenophobes hating their own modded pops was a bug that's since been removed. Functionally subspecies are treated the same as their parent specie, beyond being listed separately on the species menu.

I've done it since 1.4.1. Modified xenophobic pops do not get the alien Overlords malus, but they still seem to get annoyed that they can't be leaders.

Not sure if they would hate being around free unaltered pops though, or visa versa, as they were modded primarily for a different habitability type. Shouldn't be too hard to test though: use console commands to unlock all techs and give you a massive society reseach, build a colony ship, colonize a world, mod the pop there, then relocate a homeworld pop to that world and see if they hate each other.

I wished since 1.0 that subspecies creation was a bit more detailed and transparent. I would vastly prefer it if for example the game would allow us to set specific rights for sub-species, allow us to give sub-species their own name and choose the uniforms for the pops so that we can keep them apart.
Well, maybe with 1.5. and biologic ascendancy.

I understand the idea behind subspecies and I agree to some degree. But I wish they give you the option to modify your entire primary species if you choose the biological path in 1.5 without all eventual permanent negatives. Or the possibility to change the primary species to one of your sub-species. Or maybe that your primary species is the subspecies with the most pops.The idea of a species that "improve" the entire population is just a to cool sci-fi concept to ignore in my opinion.

This sounds fine up until the point that you modify the entire species. It's kinda strange that your primary species is still in charge after the fact that no primary species pops still exist.

We already know that subspecies share rights with parent species in 1.5. So I expect some rework on gene-modding mechanics, looking at how they work right now is kinda pointless.

Last I heard, if you loose all the pops of your current primary species (purges or genemodding), the most numerous species will be become the Primary species. And that might actually include robot pops.

Is it normal to see just 'modified' in the species list without anything indicating which race was modified? Or 'Post-', 'Super-', 'Superior' or any of the terms. Because while some of them do come with '-' i haven't seen any actual species names. Also the actual species image is blank. Game seems to be using just the one you clicked previously when i click on any of the modified races (i mean if i click XXX and then 'Superior' i see image of XXX with different paintjob, but if i click droid and then 'Superior' i see just droid). Also it was rather alarming to have one of those species in diplomatic screens since game didn't load any image/animation for them.

The Prefix and Suffix indicate it was create a by Environmental Adapatation. Wich result in a practically random species.

However the mechanic is slightly broken and tends to create a species without Portrait or main name.

This new species is usually considerd completely seperate from Genetic Engineering species.
