So I have heard that if a vassal is not of my dynasty but is granted a county by me, and I press his claims on another county, then the land the vassal gains stays within the realm. I tried this as duke of Meath on the Duke of munster, by granting one of claiments a county and pressing his claims on the Duchy of Munster, but then he just toke over the duchery and the county I gave him became part of the duchy. The weird thing is that I think I have seen this work before, I was able to press a vassals claims and retain the county.

So I was just wondering if any of you good people could clarify the exact mechanics regarding pressing claims for vassals. Does the title I am pressing have to be a lower tittle then my own? So I can only press king claims AND keep them as an emporer, duchy claims as a king, and county claims as a duke? Do they have to be of my dynasty?

Your initial thoughts were correct and if he is not of your dynasty but was your vassal before you press the claim then he will usually remain your vassal. Your problem here is that you are only a duke and pressed a claim on a duchy. You won the war and he became Duke of Munster, but can't be your vassal as his title is now of equal rank to yours and so he became an independent duke (read: a duke can't have another duke as a vassal). If you were a king and did this then he would have stayed your vassal, but for now if you want to press other peoples' claims you need to only focus on county claims or lower.

If I remember correctly, even if you are a king and press the claim of one of your counts for a duchy that doesn't belong to your De Jure lands, your count would become independent too (please, somebody correct me if I was wrong).

I've done that as the King of Ireland, and he stayed my vassal. You have to grant them a barony though, and make them a noble. Will not work for Lord Mayor, not sure about Prince-bishop.

Did the Duchy that you pressed for belong to the De Jure kingdom of Ireland? (i.e. is it an Irish duchy?)
It doesn't matter if it's de jure or not or whether the claimant is of your dynasty when you're a king pressing a vassal's claim on a duchy. In fact, if the duchy is de jure part of your kingdom then they don't even have to be a vassal (they will become one after pressing the claim). If you were an emperor pressing a claim on a kingdom for someone else then this does however behave differently than you might expect and doesn't even follow what the tooltip will tell you.

Ya, I've been playing an HRE character who's King of Burgundy, and he has a female vassal with a strong claim to France. But, she's too old to marry o/w I'd be pairing her with one of my sons.

So, it would just be replacing one French monarch with another, which is not worth it.

On the other hand, there is a dukedom in France de jure to Burgundy, and that's my next target. Now, if France resists too much, I may still consider pressing the vassal's claim and put an old woman on that throne to weaken France for an eventual show-down and take-over.

I'm duke of Burgundy, and I happened to marry my daughter through matrilineal marriage to the heir of the Byzantine Empire...so now my son-in-law is at my court, and I want to press his claims for the empire...which sadly doesn't exist anymore, has it has been invaded by fatimids.

How can I press his claims on the empire? he also has a claime over the duchy of Thrace (well, Emirate of Thrace right now), but if I win that war, he will receive that duchy only, and leave my court right?

so, is there any way to make him get the Byzantine Empire? I mean, come on, his sons are gonna be of my dynasty.... no way I can pass on that!

In your case, he become a duke, which is = titile to you. So he can not be your vassal, so ke become independed duke and too county you give him with him.

Your original statment is correct, but only of claimed title is below yours. In order to duchy to become part of your realm you need title of kIng of higher (emperor)
