So I'm a somewhat new player of paradox games, and Iv never learned how to play HoI3. Now watching HoI4, I desperately want it but I have one big question. How does planning work? Iv been trying to figure out but I can't seem to make sense of what they do to magically create a front or whatever and why certain soldiers are assigned and not others. It's very weird when I'm used to games where you manually control each army(CK2 and the like)

Firstly, this planning system is new to HOI4 and has never existed in any other PDS game, so its new to all of us. HOI3 did have an AI system similar but far less indepth but I wont go into differences or details there.

Im not sure exactly on left/right clicks and maybe modifier keys (control, alt, shift), but the tutorial will hopefully explain, or tooltips on hover over the buttons at the bottom which do much of it.

Something I have noticed though, is that if you have a plan drawn and select a unit, right click on the plan to assign it to that part (also applies when assigning to a commander). I think its right click on a border simply to create an attacking front, but that might not be the case.

Also, to execute (start) the plan, click the right arrow above the commander at the bottom. To stop is the red square to the left of that.

Thanks! Any idea how to plan like actual attacks such as concentrated breaks on the front or are those manual?

Also don't forget that you get a planning bonus to your attack & defense based on how long a unit has been assigned to a battle plan. It has a maximum value and it is a potent modifier.

It have been recently by the devs that in defence it's the entrenchment (dig-in) bonus that applies, but the plan bonus apply if you make a (defensive) counter-attack.

It is one bonus or the other, the two don't double-up.

You beat me to it Nicolas!

The defensive bonus is from having a defensive line if I remember correctly. Which still is done by making a battle plan.
