In my current Lubeck->mecklenburg game, I've managed to have an heir with pagan religion. Said heir inherited my domain, and was thus able to create the kingdom of Pomerania.

BUT: I can't seem to find a way to convert back to christianity, and the Emperor has decided to take all of my titles, one by one, until I cave. I've placed a christian priest in charge of converting the capital province in the hope he'd convert me, but so far no luck. There are no decisions to be made (seemingly), I can't make a diplomatic decision to return to the christian flock, I seem to be stuck. Any way out? Other than getting myself killed and having a christian heir?

I don't think you can convert as your current char, in the base game at least. Your heir can change religion during education.

Become the vassal of a christian (easy... but maybe not what you want).

I don't think people in your court attempt to convert you between religions terribly often, it tends to be more of a heresies thing.

Do you have the trait zealous? That might be what's stopping the convert to liege's religion decision appearing.

As far as I understand it, he's independent. If he's a vassal, there should be a decision in the intrigue tab (convert to liege religion for a piety hit)

I'm king and my liege is the HRE. But there is no choice to switch to my liege's religion. There is a choice to switch to his culture (I'm pommeranian) and that I won't do.

Also, I'm not zealous.

Time to look at the game files. Perhaps that decision isn't available for kings? Only dukes and lower? I think the game atm is currently designed in mind with playable pagans not really in mind. It's mostly designed for pagans to get conquered and that's it. There's two fixes to that, first of all playable pagans and lots of detail including converting to Christianity will probably be in ck2 within the next year, but till then the only option is either to mod it yourself or use a mod that changes it. There may already be some events to convert to Christianity in the game however... it's pretty frustrating to play waiting for an event that may never come because it doesn't exist.

You can only chose to convert to your leige religion if you are from the same group. So you will have to wait either fro your chaplain to convert you or for the random event where you can chose to convert.

Can't you protect your titles from revokation by handing them to your sons? Your king title will still be at risk then though.

After some experimentation, I've come to the following roadmap:

1. Get my (catholic) court chaplain (who is catholic) to convert people in the capital province.
2. have the emperor demand some county or other. Refuse, let the war take as long as possible, then surrender, which will leave us in jail. Goal is not to win (we're badly outnumbered) but to protract the war, giving the chaplain as much time as he can to
3. Court chaplain converts my heir in random event (hopefully), or
3b. Tutor for my heir converts him to christianity.
4. Commit suicide by attempting assassinations with low % success chance until the retaliation kills me.

Hope this'll work. Also hope the random number god is for me (when it comes to the heir) and against me (when it comes to assassinations).

Understandable but a bit sad... offering a conversion to Christianity was a major political tool for pagan rulers. It would make the HRE Kaiser look very good in the eyes of the pope, if he can spread Christianity to the pagan lands!

So that ... worked. Better than expected in fact: in the first war with the HREmperor, the emperor (for god knows what reason) offered me a white peace. relatively quickly afterwards, he sent a new demand my way for a duchy, but by then he was at war with france, and I was able to sit on his demand for a while. Enough for my heir to be converted to christianity.

So: refuse the demand from the emperor, which gets us in a war, surrender to the emperor immediately, which gets us in prison, pay 150 ducats to try and assassinate some sunni count with a ridiculously high intrigue. Get killed by the retaliation. Rule as the new (5 year old) genius, catholic, king of Pomerania.

The downside: had to grant a bunch of duchies to vassals because of the diplomacy penalty (also low stewardship). All in all, though: not a bad resolution.

Funny how in this game, suicide (or the equivalent) can actually be a strategic positive from the player's point of view.

He can't be independent if the emperor is revoking his titles. So I can't see a problem why he can't convert in the intrigue tab -> decisions.

e. As somebody pointed out, the option is available only for the characters in the same group, for example for Lollardism to Catholicism or from Orthodoxy to Catholicism. By the way, in the newest patch, if you imprison an infidel or a heretic, they will automatically agree and get out of prison. Is this available to AI? I mean, lose war, get imprisoned by the Kaiser, hope he demands your conversion, end of revocations?

I usually have a problem to stay Pagan not to convert to Catholism. Tutors work almost 95pc. I am also surprised you had no option to convert to lieges religion. I have this option for 500 piety.

It's not sad, I'm sure religion will get plenty of work for it in the next year's worth of ck2 dlcs. Just means we have to wait. There's also a year's worth of mods to look forward to, the best ones might not even be planned or thought up yet. That sortof thing is absolutely strongly moddable with events. Events are very moddable. With some intelligent conditions some decent pagan to christian conversion events could add very strongly to the game.

That's very true! Playing as the despot of Serbia once, I made sure (through elective succession) that my brother would inherit my realm since he was married to the Basilissa of the ERE and his son would at some point become Basileus. The brother wasn't much of a ruler, though. I was somewhat happy to find out he was suffering of a depression, so I decided to commit suicide through the intrigue menu. It freed me of an unfit despot and also cemented my family's rise to the throne of the ERE.

I usually don't have the guts to manufacture a religious or cultural change for I fear to find myself in the very position you were caught in, but I really do want to try playing as some sort of heretic for a while sometime in the future.

I did it by lucking out a bit and having my Pagan heir inherit while he was still a child. Then I just tutored him back to Catholicism before the HRE gained Medium CA.

Which is the problem: going heathen while the HRE has Medium or higher CA is a no no. You should've switched to elective, and only elected your heathen heir if its safe to do so without imminent worry of title revocation. If CA is too high and/or there's no chance of getting it back down in time, then abort and elect a different relative.

There is an option to change to your liege's religion, but I think that's supposed to be for Orthodox <---> Catholic, Shiite <---> Sunni, Heretics, etc. Or "related" religions.

There's several types of relationships between religions
Same religion (catholic to catholic)
Heretic religion (lollard to catholic)
Same religion group (orthadox to catholic)
Other religions (pagan, muslim, christian to any other one)
Parent religion (lollard to catholic)
Child heresy (catholic to lollard)

Pretty sure that option is available for heretics and same religion group vassals.
