So, the first time I performed Mending the Great Schism (which I cheated to do, just to see what it did) I got an event pop up with some chick asking me to become Catholic. With that in mind I have since done a real game with the idea of going Catholic upon Mending the Great Schism, giving me Holy Wars against the large number of people that go Orthodox, access to Holy Orders and getting rid of the annoying Patriarch bureaucracy. I have since performed it about 20 times and have not gotten that event again, probably gonna settle for being super Orthodox and the ability to excommunicate people in Africa/Egypt (my capital is Carthage). Along that line I was wondering if the event for Greek chariot/ball sport thing is Greek Orthodox only? I haven't had it happen much in my game, but my first ruler was Catholic (King of Sicily, Despot of Jerusalem via the first Crusade), still like 3 times, 5 tops, I've had other games where I have that in a year. While I'm on that subject, does anyone know how the Orthodox Saint events work, where you donate money in the name of some Saint and you get a permanent boost to one attribute? A list of them and chances would be cool, have not been able to find anything on the forums or Wiki, probably because any search with the words orthodox and events just turns up references to Legacy of Rome. Thanks, and sorry if there was actually a post on this somewhere.

The details of this are in schism_events.txt. One effect of the event is that the Catholic faith becomes a heresy of the Orthodox faith; which I suppose represents that the remaining Catholic nobility would radicalize and push back. Now, if you convert, your court and capital province will convert along with you, meaning that any new randomly-generated courtiers in your court will be Orthodox, too. However, no one will convert unless their liege demands it. (This counterfactual event is very much top-down, not bottom-up, much like the historical conversion of the Kievan Rus. The fact that the new churches are much weaker than the ones they replaced might be why formerly-Catholic nobility like the idea so much.) If you do get Catholics in your court, either because you already let them stay or they arrive from elsewhere, they’ll proselytize aggressively, especially if they’re zealous and diligent. So, what happened, basically, was that you had a Catholic in your court and she started making converts. They should only convert your subjects, though, not you.

If you want to engineer this deliberately, try inviting a Catholic priest to your court, appoint him Lord Spiritual, and tell him to start converting your capital to Catholicism. (Your Patriarch will hate this.) You can also send your heir to be educated by a Catholic (preferably zealous and diligent, with a religious education). You can convert at any time if your liege is Catholic; if you’re independent and a heretic, you can convert back to Orthodoxy. Oh, and finally, if you’re a Tengri ruler of the Golden Horde or the Il-Khanate, you can convert by event.

If your lord spiritual is not a heretic, and you have him research instead of converting, there’s a small chance he’ll convert to a heresy; and after the schism is mended, Catholicism becomes a heresy. In this case, he’ll always offer you conversion.

You will only get the Tzykanion events if you are in the Byzantine Empire, Greek, male, between the ages of 16 and 64, healthy, and not in prison. You can get the icon events if you are Orthodox and not a heretic. Each ruler can only do it once, and you’re more likely to get the chance if you’re zealous, gregarious ahd have at least 100 piety.

I don't understand why you would want to go Catholic. I don't think Catholics get Holy War Casus Belli against Orthodox. Also not everyone goes Orthodox, some stay Catholic.

If you mended the schism, went catholic, and somehow managed to turn everything catholic, you'd still be a heresy of the Orthodox religion. Don't heresies spread randomly when MA is low? I know I never had much success keeping my country all Lollard (vassals & counties kept switching to random other heresies).

I don't understand why you would want to go Catholic. I don't think Catholics get Holy War Casus Belli against Orthodox. Also not everyone goes Orthodox, some stay Catholic.
After the event fires, Catholics are considered heretical members of the Orthodox religion, have the holy war CB with the parent religion & vice versa.
