How does France become a member of the HRE?

I played a game recently and France wound up becoming emperor of the HRE. If I recall, it was after I carved a small path into them and took Paris. Otherwise the nation was mostly in tact. Did I just take a large enough chunk of France to where they were able to join or is there some event that fires that allows them to join? I seem to recall they became emperor immediately so it seems like an event.

Also, on a side note, is it still possible to join the HRE as Norway by taking one Danish province in the independence war that borders the HRE? Wasn't sure if the Scandinavian map revisions prevent that from being possible anymore.

If my memory does not fail me, a nation becomes part of the Holy Roman Empire when its capital is in a province of the Empire. What must have happened is that after you took Paris, the capital was automatically transferred to some province that was already part of the Holy Empire

Is France actually a member of the HRE? You can become Emperor without being a member.

You need to be able to add your capital to the HRE if you fulfil the conditions, just taking one province that borders the HRE is not enough. You'll need to "snake" your way via Sweden and Denmark to the HRE if you don't want to move your capital.

There is no size or location restriction on becoming emperor, that's only if you want to become a prince.

What was their new capital after you took Paris? It's possible that moved it into the HRE. It's also possible that they are simply a non-member Emperor. That actually happened to me once when playing France by accident. I had been improving relations within the HRE to defend against AE. Leagues formed, the Protestant electors decided they hated Austria and elected me. Then they decided they hated me because they made me the leader of the Catholic League. Wonky mechanics, there.

Remeber sugar daddy France can border 4 of the 1444 electors very quickly.
4 electors are on the Rhineland, stupid easy to border via BUR inhiret.
The other 3 East Germany electors, you can ally the best one(s)
You only need a majority to win emperor, like it or not.
