How does demand title work?

I'm having a bit of trouble with the demand title action and the relevant ambition, when playing as count Alfred of Dorset in the Old Gods start. Getting enough prestige to demand a title is easy enough, but very quickly my liege will have picked the 'ask someone to help me handle my land'-decision, and I'm handing off land to random courtiers while at the same time my liege promises some to me. Which he can't give to me, since I'm already handing it out to everyone but myself.

I know I can't win everything all the time, but this does strike a bit odd to me.

I'm not sure if it got changed in the last patch, but as Alfred if you resign from the council then you won't get the task to hand out the titles, which your liege will then hang onto at least until the wars he's in are over, which ought to give you plenty of time to ask for a title successfully
