I often find myself wanting to play EU4, but not knowing what country to play. When it happens I usually spend 15 or so minutes looking around the map, trying to figure out what country or geographical area could spark some special interest, until I get irritated by my own disability to choose and quit the game. I'm having this problem right now.

How do you usually go about picking a country to play as?

Usually I think of what ahistorical event I would like to happen and then go from there. For example, recently I envisioned a unified Italy, colonizing the American South and having Greece in a PU. So I chose Naples and off I went.

it varies. I usually want to try a game mechanic that I have not experienced before, so I would pick that. I also get inspiration from the forums. I did an Austria run just to play with HRE stuff and get the PU achievement. I still need to try a republic. I've done big catholic countries already ( Spain and France). Did one protestant conversion ( Sweden) . did one non-Europe run as Egypt->Arabia . now doing France again to try out CS . Next is Brandenburg ( I think ) to try out the awesome "terminator" troops I read about on the forums.

due to job and family constraints, I can only play 1 to 2 hours average per day, so I'm still on the first campaign since CS came out and only in 1537 :)

I just have a mental list of countries I'm interested in playing in the future, sometimes with a personal goal attached. I like to play through the whole 1444–1821 period so it takes me a long time to play all the way through as a country, and I also don't plan on playing a country a second time without a lot of time in between (haven't done so so far). Countries get added to the list randomly, usually triggered by me getting interested in a country for whatever reason (often by someone mentioning it here on the forums, sometimes because of an achievement with it). When I get done with a game, or tired enough of it to start up a second one in parallel, I just see which country I feel like playing the most. Right now I'm interested in playing as either Ming or a daimyo, though I recently had an interesting idea for a challenge of playing in the HRE, specifically avoiding being emperor, and seeing how fast I can get the emperor to pass all the reforms.

I look at the ideas, and flag. Now it's an excellent time to play as ROTW nations if you haven't tried it much. It's not even necessary to westernize anymore to have a fun game.

Next is Brandenburg ( I think ) to try out the awesome "terminator" troops I read about on the forums.

Stacking 130% Discipline on top of who knows how much morale and combat ability bonuses and stackwiping Austria or France with even numbers just feels like cheating.

I usually just choose a goal and see what country could do it and how much do I want to challenge myself.

ie: Form Germany
Country: Any German country
Easy:Brandenburg
Hard: Ehh dunno, Hesse?

9 out of 10 times, if not more :p, I keep playing the same nations in the same region, which is Poland-Muscovy-Sweden, so around the Baltic area. Reason being, I absolutely love the history of the region and those nations. I enjoy "polishing" my strats (see what I did there :p?) and trying out new things and watching what happens.

They can be challenging if you set yourself a challenging goal.

I pick the most unique nations possible - I try new area, new religion, something with unique events, government etc.

For example Japan is super unique awesome nation, I played also Iroquis to try North America, Bukhara to experiment with hordes, Reformed Sweden, Sikh Punjab, now I am playing as buddhist Lan Xang.

I use to think of fun things to do, usually with small nations. Here are some plans I still have:

- New game with the Netherlands in common sense, following rules for myself:
Only take provinces in the low countries + Calais and Rethel, they are Flemish and Wallonian, my cultures next to Dutch.
Stay into the empire by becoming the emperor before forming the Netherlands (I assume you don't get kicked out then :p)
Be a colonial empire and protect the German lands of the empire with fun wars in the mean time :D

- Brittany, finally with the going tall option it's a nice option. Just stay Brittany, go colonial, maintain my start regions, perhaps take Anjou and Poitou, not much more though, wanna go tall.

- Colonial empire with Genoa, take Crimea over, take out Aragon, move through Tunis into Africa, invade the middle east. Fight off Russia and the Ottomans eventually, take over the middle east and whatever may come on my path. Not much plans for expansion into Europe outside of Italy, but taking over Africa and Asia by taking control of the mediterranean and move east, either north of the Caspian sea or South of it that depends on what oppertunities I get, I guess taking out Tunis and after that the Mamluks and then colonise through the red sea would also be an option.

Ultimate goal, pullling as much trade through the middle east Crimea to Alexandria node, towards Genoa, instead of arround Africa or through the Caribean. Also possible to do as Venice, but allready had a venice game and somehow I've got interested in Genoa when they conquered the entire Crimea in one game of mine, so I want to try and do that to, take out Circassia, Golden Horde, Georgia and just go crazy over there :p

- Riga form Courland, build a nice balkan empire, take out denmark / sweden eventually, maybe even Russia and go colonial late game when it's allready colonized by the big colonizers for some fun late game competition in the America's (being there first isn't as much fun as being there late and fight for the last spots :p)

- Tunisia, islamic conquest of Europe game and eventually the new world if it's possible :p Not really planned out much, probably one for sometime in the distant future..

Now most of the time I just think of fun countries to play suddenly and I remember them. The Netherlands is the country where I live, I've played them as the very first country, but haven't played them now for a long time and with the going tall feature it looks like fun to do again. The others mostly because I noticed those countries in other games. Brittany doesn't get smashed as often anymore since patch 11 or something. So I saw them colonizing and thought, that might be a fun project. I've seen Genoa conquer the Crimea several times and thought, that would also be fun to do myself. Also I guess Genoa can be a challenge early game, with a small army and very spread territories. Riga I thought of when I saw ddrjake getting beaten by them xD And well Tunisia seems the most fun country to invade Italy and Spain, also for the Carthago achievement, if I'm finally gonna play a berber nation, it might aswell be them.

Maybe you like one of my ideas, otherwise just look arround a little bit and try to think of fun goals, I can't wait to play all of mine, so I'm probably bussy for the next half year accomplishing all the above xD

I never understand why people keep playing the same country, that seems boring as hell to me. I usually pick countries with either fun positions (e.a. genoa or cool achievements, I never play majors though.

Totally have the same issue, but generally I just return to the same countries. My idea is that with country x I want to achieve y in region z - generally roleplay heavy. I pick a german country, the idea is to either form Germany or hold the HRE. In Italy my aims are Italian and Mediterannean. Etc etc.

I primarily play nations that can get an achievement. I know it's totally arbitrary, but I like having a defined goal as a victory condition.
Besides that I pick nations based on ideas, events and it's location.

"Now that I think of it" edit:
I also really like doing crazy things with nations. And if I can think of something crazy that might work for a nation I will almost always try it. These are probably the games I have the most fun with.

(Im kinda proud of this one so indulge me if you will.)
A few patches back I planned an ironman game where I started as burgundy, completely destroyed France, became the hre emperor, proclaimed erbkaisertum, formed the Netherlands, became a republic (republic emperor) and finally culture switched and formed France. (so I was a French dutch emperor republic with dutch ideas)

And in my last game I played as Austria and I made a full sized AI Russia join the HRE by adding reva (st petersburg) to the empire and giving it to them. (Russia has a decision to make it it's new capital after they've westernized.) I had to give them some cash, but afterwards the Russian duchy was a fact.

I usually go for something unusual or with unique mechanics. This often leads to poking around India or looking for somewhere that might be fun to take Protestant or Reformed.

And even in some of these areas, some choices are just too mainstream. For example, if I'm forming Germany, starting as BBurg or forming Prussia doesn't even cross my mind.

I never understand why people keep playing the same country, that seems boring as hell to me. I usually pick countries with either fun positions (e.a. genoa or cool achievements, I never play majors though.

There's apparently a range. I play Brandenburg every change; I really like it's start, and it's usually my go-to for single player because of how exciting it is early game, and even late game if I'm too drunk to expand properly. For MP there's different mindsets, and I'm the wrong type of competitive for it I think in that I don't always want to win but I want to play my best, so for me picking countries I am already familiar with is a must. I do NOT want to play Ottomans or Muscovy, for instance, because I know there's events I am not as familiar with because I never play them, and am too used to western or far-from-western to feel I'd do a decent job as them. Meanwhile, England bores the snot out of me in SP but there it's my #1.

Some players go so far as to say I'm an X player, which seems really weird to me, almost sounds like a person talking about an MMO, but to each their own I guess. I suppose I'm a HRE player, since that's probably a good 90% of my SP games.

Then there's the whole play your own nation/race/etc aspect, which some people seem to go apeshit over while I personally never felt that way about any game, in fact I despise playing the USA almost anywhere in any game, but for some it's the driving motivation over all others.

1.) Map color
2.) National Ideas/Events
3.) Achievements/interesting goals

Not necessarily in that order, but I cannot lie; the color's important.
