Using Nukes

Like previous post, chose a nuclear-capable system (bomber or rocket), click on detailed view of that unit. There will be a nuclear symbol in the upper right corner (if you have bombs available). Click on it to add nuke to aircraft / rocket.

Usage hint: The weapons are supposed to be strategic (city killers), but in the game they are far more effective used tactically (blast a hole in enemy front lines or vaporize his 74-division stack).

Note that provinces hit by nuclear bombs get reduced to 0 IC permanently. While this is not historically realistic (in the game time period, the bombs were only big enough to rip the heart out of a city, not level entire provinces), it can be used strategically - by targetting your opponent's high-IC provinces you can partially cripple their economy permanently. In my last game (as USA, with late war entry and rushing nukes) I was able to drop 6 nukes early in 1944 - and used them on Japan's 6 highest IC provinces. Now they have nothing over 12, and about half their usual IC.... :)

How to use: Pick a strat bomber unit (or other unit capable of carrying it, indicated by an atom logo, but I'll use an SB as example since it's historic), and go into the unit stats screen (the one where it lists off about 15 stats and has the strategic redeploy/upgrade buttons). Click on the atom logo, and it will light up, indicating that one is now loaded. Then assign the bomber to strategic bombing on the target province.

We should add another warning, though. The infrastructure will also be reduces to 0, albeit temporarily. IIRC, it will return in like 3 or 6 months, but during those first months that province will be impassable to everyone. So don't nuke a province that you need to move through. For example, if you are going to advance up the Italian boot, don't nuke Bologna or you will be stuck for months waiting for the province to recover its infrastructure.

This strategy doesn't work too well on any country which isn't Japan. Japan has virtually all of their useful IC in just a few provinces in the Home Islands, and taking those out will cripple them. No-one esle is so vulnerable, not even the US. For other countries, reload as them and look in the ledger for their steel or coal provinces. If their production is highly concentrated (and the USA's is, while their ICs are not!) taking those out will cripple them. They'll eventually recover production, but they'll have lost thousands (hundreds of thousands for the USA) of resource units while they do it. Most economies can't stand it, and it has the advantage that most of their IC is intact when you roll in and turn it into your own IC.

Actually, Britain is similarly vulnurable. Virtually all of her coalproduction is concentrated in 5 or 6 provinces and once they have been bombed to 0, they will have perhaps 25IC left. Since you need to have airsuperiority anyway for an invasion, it is a very effective way to prepare the British for Sealion, especially if you fly from Norway (less AA to pass ;) ). I had great fun as Germany using their own strategy on them :D .
