Not quite correct. You need to get your ranking with the avatar you wish to appear to -100.

which means of course that you need +100% favour with the opposite god. The easiet way to get a large negative rank with a particular god is to build temples for the opposite god. Each temple to the opposite god will give approximately -20% (depending how far offline the god relationship marker is)

Yes and no. Often building 5 or more temples to only one god will leave you with only -99 hatred on the opposing god.

OK, how do you get from -99 to -100? I cleared a map, completely owned everything except one opponent's capital, and then built temples to Dauros on every holy ground. I was 100 with him, but didn't know to check the opposite rank. I built a ton of temples... no avatar. Is there anything else I can do?

He is right. You guys have forgotten another key element for shifting relations. Quest completion or refusal can shift relations around. Technically you could reach -100 without building any temples. but that would require a "lucky" string of quests. I say lucky simply because the factions for the quest can be different causing you backwards, forwards or sideways progression. I bet someone could do it eventually without building any temples, but it would take a very long time to get the right combination to reach -100, aiming for a specific one without building temples would be like astronomical odds.

Also keep in mind building temples to other gods cause shifts as well. You can reach -100 with a combination of opposing temples, building temple of either faction on the sides of opposing, and quests. So basically you could aim for one avatar and get sidetracked to one on either side by building temples of other factions or by quests.

You should know when the avatar appears because it should give you a quest to kill it.

I doubt you need to get to -100 to have an avatar come after you.
My standing with Krypta got stuck at -99 (even after building more Agrela temples) and after about 10 turns Krypta's avatar spawned.

The easiest way to think of it is kinda like the old Spirographs drawing tools. The sprocket circle inside another circle and as the sprocket moves towards one side it pulls away form the other, but if you can pull it sideways as well. Depending on the direction it moves is how much shift in relations you get. You could have improved from -100 to -99 from some other action that involed neither the avatar faction or the faction you have high relations with.
