Thanks DB. The reason I ask is there's little to no transparency off the wiki. I've only read the following through reddit:
- Friendly relations allow for institutions to spread faster both through adjacent provinces (same continent, same land mass) and through sea tiles.
- Unfriendly relations slow down spread through adjacent provinces, but don't halt it completely.
- Unfriendly relations prevent institution spread completely through sea tiles.
But I didn't know how accurate this was or if there's even more going on.
If that's all there is to it, I do what you suggested, privateer all the trade nodes around me as well for extra measure (and power projection vs Ming/Korea), take over Ainu so there's no spread through my land connection, and just never take any China mainland territory until I want to go full bore and knee deep into China. Plus if I want to ally any tributaries of China, I pick ones there's no connection to, land or sea.
