in hoi3 I rather reluctantly used speed 2 prewar and 1 thereafter, but everything I've seen tells me that now I can stay on 1 throughout and there will always be something to either to do or think about. After a couple of months of learning the game, I hope to either join or found a Tortoise MP group for people who also like a campaign to last for weeks . .

I would love something like this. :)
I would like to try MP eventually but I do not want to play on speed 3 or quicker

absolutely agree with you there =) love slow constant games.
If you guys start something contact me, would absolutely join o7

Set everything up paused on day 1, speed 4 or 5 until the action starts, then speed 2 or 3 with occasional pauses for pondering research and production plans.

In all previous HOI games I have very much played in a way where I set things like production queues and troop layouts etc while the game is in a paused state and then set it to full speed for a bit till stuff gets done then pause and rinse and repeat the whole process :)

This time round some friends of mine have been convincing me that the best way to play is set the speed to the lowest setting but never ever pause to try and mimic the time sensitive pressure the real world you inflict on its leaders.

How do you guys go about playing HOI? Do you think the slowest setting is just to slow?

the way the game is designed to be played is speed 2 or 3 depending on whats going on and no pausing :) It means you might make mistakes sometimes, but imo is more fun and tense

Is that design philosophy why there is (apparently) no longer message settings that would have allowed more pause-heavy gameplay?
(Admittedly I haven't played HoI4 myself, so can't know how well it works out, but at least Stellaris still feels somewhat "wrong" without auto-pauses)

Mostly MP, speed 3 prewar, speed 2 during the war. Pause is allowed for a few major events... Barbarossa, Overlord, Sea Lion, etc... But mostly no pauses unless everybody's hungry at the same time or something. :)

I run all my paradox games like this. Speed 3 while at peace, speed 2 while at war. Maybe even lower to speed 1, if it's a big war :)

I think that if you pause too much to do some things then you will need to play in a very fast speed because there will be some portions of time in which you will have to just wait. Playing at slow speed (2x) seems preferable to me.

At the highest speed possible (so in peacetime speed 5), with pausing whenever I need to select new research, produce or place new units or pretty much anything tbh. Though I'm getting more used to multiplayer by playing EU4.

Speed 0-2 in peace. Speed 0-1 in war. I am a strategy player. On speed 3+ this game is clearly a RTS. After playing every early RTS I have completely abandoned the genre. One strength of HOIIV seems to me that it is both strategy if played slowly and RTS if played fast. So everyone can pick his poison. I have not seen a single strategy player in any lets play so far and the speed of the Paradox Twitch feed gives me eye cancer. Nobody knows where their troops are, who they are and where Vietnam is. They just spam arrows, order 30 new divisions and wonder why they have -17k Equipment two minutes in the war. I am delighted that I see so many people on this thread sticking to a slow pace which is crucial. But that´s just me :)

The ironman mode is a great addition; combine it with no pausing and you avoid a china teapot war where shit never happens. I'm not sure how I feel about no alerts at all, but if it has to be a binary choice between that and constant mustreclaimprovince spam and allowmedebt spam, I'll take it.

Constant speed 3, manual pausing has worked out great for me in EUIV and I hope it'll work out well here, too. I'll deal with tech and focuses immediately as they finish, unless there's some sort of strategic reason to wait. Should make for a good mini-manager's encirclement speed, too.

Here's to hoping I haven't been spoiled by World War Wednesday and think times are passing too agonizingly. :p

Hopefully I can play it just like EU4. Speed 4/5 during peace, pausing whenever I need to open a menu. Speed 3/4 during war, pausing any time I need to do anything at all. I do not like to miss things or let things even go by 1 day if it can be helped.

This is also one of the reasons I have stopped playing Stellaris. The pausing/unpausing in it is just terrible right now.

In every PDS game, I never issue an order or click a button unless the game is paused. When the game isn't paused, it's max speed with my finger on the space-bar.
