In all previous HOI games I have very much played in a way where I set things like production queues and troop layouts etc while the game is in a paused state and then set it to full speed for a bit till stuff gets done then pause and rinse and repeat the whole process :)

This time round some friends of mine have been convincing me that the best way to play is set the speed to the lowest setting but never ever pause to try and mimic the time sensitive pressure the real world you inflict on its leaders.

How do you guys go about playing HOI? Do you think the slowest setting is just to slow?

Never pause, 120 apm , always multiplayer, annoy everyone who is slow by being much faster than them because of my past as a competitive RTS and FPS player :D

Speed 2 or Speed 3 for the most part with some pausing here and there (multiplayer). Especially since they gave us headroom for selecting a new national focus or a new research without wasting precious research time, there will be alot less pausing required in my oppinion anyway.

Speed 4 and Speed 5 for singleplayer only, when there is a large invasion going on and watching it from a high up strategical view and pausing for some advanced maneuvers and exploiting of openings or potential encirclements.

in Hoi3 i normaly played on Speed 2 most of the time. Managing Production and Research while days passed by slowly. Tried to pause as few as possible. Only if to much happend in short periodes of time. Anyway my focus with HoI4 will be on Multiplayer, so never pausing at all it is \o/

I hit the pause (space) bar so often you wouldn't believe, plus I set most notifications to "Pop-Up-And-Pause". I really, really, really don't play MP. ;-)

Lowest speed setting would take a very long time. Personally in the early years I tend to leave it on max speed with occasional pausing and then I tend to dial it down a bit, dropping to 1 or 2 when intense war fighting is going on.

Speed 5, most of the things auto-pause. I have thought about that "time-sensitiveness", but in the end assumed that generally there was still days or at least hours to make those decisions in real WW2. I would be awfully stressed trying to play well while having only seconds for critical decisions and the actual implementation of those decisions (I.E. clicking correctly).

In peace - speed 5, with tons of pausing.
In a war - speed 1 or 2, with tons of pausing.
This is a Paradox game, of course I'm going to spend 80% of the time paused. WWWs are a perfect representation of how I don't play.

Are you sure you're not losing time for national focuses? Because it uses 1 political power/day so it would be easy to just pick the national focus on the last day to not lose any PP...
You would of course loose that political power and not save any. It wouldnt make sense to only have it for research but not for national focuses.

So you're telling my national focus needs 150 days, i can take it on the 140th and use 140PP ? I didn't see something like that with Daniel last week on WWW when he needed PP...
The headroom isnt so big. A few days maybe a week at most, just to prevent you from constantly loosing days of research because you cant select the next one so fast without constantly pausing, just as with research aswell. You cant wait 140 days and complete a national focus within 10 if it takes 150 day in total.

Oh okay, because i'm always pausing on any Paradox game to not lose time, i hope you're telling right! Not pausing is a heaven for me :)

I enjoy the game the most if i use all possibilitys and micromanagement. So slow speed most of the times and break every time when needed to not waste a singel ingame hour.
For me a strategy game is like chess, it takes time if you want to avoid faults.

I always play on the slower speed. Only in EU do I raise it to speed x2. Even in HoI peace time I do not raise the speed too much. The slow speed enable me to play without suing pause and to micromanage if there is any need.

I find it hard to enjoy paradox game when the speed is too quick and the rhythm is regularly broke by pause. I feel it like the wrong way to play it.

I do appreciate when there is little happening immediately. To me wait or imagine different plan is an integral part of grand strategy. It challenge me to deal with my decisions. To find a balance between keeping a focus or change radically of plan. Concentrate my actions on a single goal or take advantage of short term possibilities.
It is very enjoyable to keep concentrate like this. Do some errors and correct them. Advance slowly, step by step to a greater goal. Also it is better for role playing.

in hoi3 I rather reluctantly used speed 2 prewar and 1 thereafter, but everything I've seen tells me that now I can stay on 1 throughout and there will always be something to either to do or think about. After a couple of months of learning the game, I hope to either join or found a Tortoise MP group for people who also like a campaign to last for weeks . .

in hoi3 I rather reluctantly used speed 2 prewar and 1 thereafter, but everything I've seen tells me that now I can stay on 1 throughout and there will always be something to either to do or think about. After a couple of months of learning the game, I hope to either join or found a Tortoise MP group for people who also like a campaign to last for weeks . .
I would love something like this. :)
I would like to try MP eventually but I do not want to play on speed 3 or quicker
