I used the console to test a concept I wanted to run with, role playing wise... To escape destruction, the byzantine empire colonizes the west indies and establishes a new country there.

I was going to colonize the carribean, release the resulting colonial nation, and play as that colonial nation.

I do not get the option to play as that country when I release it, and when I click on it from the loading screen, I just get Byzantium. I can not play as this nation. What gives? Do I actually have to have conquest of paradise to play as it, even after setting it free?

To be clear, the colonial nation has been released. It is independent. It's a monarchy, not a colonial government.

I have been looking, and there are no direct answers to this quesiton- the game itself even says you can play as the country you're releasing, but the closest I get to an answer online is "You can't play as a colonial nation without CoP". Which is kind of evading the actual question.

You need the DLC to enable you to play as the released Colony. Conquest of paradise DLC.
This is the correct answer.

From the Steam page for CoP:
  • Manage colonies or play as the colony: The colonies can manage their own affairs, declare colonial war or even strive for liberty from their motherland, or you can choose to take direct control of the colony and play as the new nation instead.

EDIT: It's half price on the Paradox Store until the end of the day if you want to pick it up.

I think it's well understood that you need CoP. Coming from someone completely different, who definitely has CoP, what steps does one take in game to play as a colonial nation? I've got no freaking clue how to do it.

Any predictions for the October Steam sale? What do paradox games usually go for in october?
I wouldn't expect anything over -50% for DLCs, but maybe we'll be in luck and it will be -67%.

Though I have to say the biggest selling point of the CoP was RNW/natives. This was a rather minor feature.

If you are playing ironman the only way is to either start at a later date when the CN exists or choose the "play as released nation" and grant it independence after you create it. If you aren't playing ironman you can tag switch to the colony in the usual manner.
