Have not thought about it, im still using the 4 pilots you start with.

Glitch, 10/9/4/10
Medusa, 10/4/4/9
Behemoth, 10/7/5/8
Dekker. 10/6/4/10
Myself, 10/10/4/10

Just finished "Extraction" story mission.

I dont see the need to hire more pilots tbh, havnt lost one yet, im ok with their voices for most part.

Greetings,

Just wondering what is the general idea behind hiring new mech pilots. Purely on stats/skills, does their background traits come into count, their voice lines, and/or their portraits?

Also does having a stable of mech pilots with varying backgrounds help you with those random ship events?
It's a good idea to look for skills that fill a gap you need filled, or to serve as a backup for a position in case one of your A-Team gets injured or killed.

Also, if they're Canopian odds are they have a STD and they will steal you wallet. Filthy Magistracy pigdogs...

I hired my first mechwarrior because I needed one ASAP and he had Sensor Lock.

I hired my second mechwarrior because she had Master Tactician.

I hired my third mechwarrior because we needed one right then and there. There were no pilots with interesting skill sets so I went with a unique Kickstarter Backer (no skills) instead.

I might be mistaken but the only difference between a skilled and an unskilled mechwarrior seems to be the initial payment (just a few K difference).
Their monthly payment is seems to be the same anyways.

A mechwarrior wirh 15 skillpoints always gets 30k, one with 9 skillpoints alyways gets 18k....

So unless i am mistaken there is actually no benefit from taking a lowly recruit and train him yourself.

There is if the other options have skills you don't need. If you're looking for someone to pilot an LRM boat you don't want or need them to have one of the piloting abilities, probably. Likewise, you don't want a scout mech's pilot to have Bulwark, most likely, since it won't be spending much time stationary.

Veterans are good for when you need a skilled pilot right this second and there's a decent one available that you can make due with. Rookies are good for when you need a pilot with specific skills but the only vets already have their specialization abilities.

I believe their backgrounds are purely for character immersion, so you feel you`re dealing with Human Beings, not just stats. And why would you think voice lines would have such an effect? Methinks you are over-analysing it all.

For me, though, the cosmetic aesthetics are important because I tend to choose people I like the look of and seem to have the right mentality- again, this is just for MY immersion, apart from their fighting stats it actually has no effect ingame. I like to do it like in real life, "Does this person have the right temperament and look like he has himself sorted out? Are his abilities good? Ok, employed."

Yea, with a vet you have to live with the skills that they have while you can form a recruit as you like.

But what I meant is that it makes no difference when it comes to their wages...once the vet has reached 15 skillpoints you have to pay him 30k, and as soon as the recruit also reaches 15 skillpoints he recieves the same.

Veterans are good if they have the skills you want them o have - it saves time by skipping some of their development process.

With me I tend to go for rookies in case I learn that the reason I lose one of my A team later is because of a poor mech/pilot combination. If it's the mech, I just reconfigure and train the rookie to replace the old one. If it was the pilot, I repair the mech and try to determine a good combination of skills. If it's both... Science will need to be done, obviously.

Glitch is my number 2 but I find her loud and annoying. Hired a chick with an irish accent and just realized I'll only manage about 1 mission in a month. Was lucky when I got multiple missions on the same planet. Had to fire the irish chick. Should've got rid of Medusia.

Wonder if there is a list of backers, would be nice to see who contributed and got a mechwarrior profile.

As I rule I don't interact with backer characters any more than I absolutely have to. It wasn't worth it in PoE and it isn't worth it in Battletech.

Beyond that, I tend to hire rookies (it's more fun if you build them up yourself, in my opinion) and I select them based on their voice. Stats don't matter if they're rookies anyway and none of the random portraits are especially good, so I might as well choose someone whose voice won't annoy me even after running 20 missions with them.
