Make sure your fleets aren't carrying around a lot of crappy level 1 and 2 destroyers, they will seriously hold back the rest of the fleet with their terrible range. The carriers, transports, and battleships should be able to reach islands that are pretty far away.

However, it is possible for Japan to invade via the Atlantic; taking South Africa is a prerequisite to taking Ascension Island and/or St. Helena, from which you can reach Rio in Brazil.

If Japan is in Axis then you can rebase your ship to any European Axis member port. So your ships should go from Japan by Pacific Ocean and then around South America to Europe. When your flotilla is near ex. Chile - you can stop them manually and invade (small cheat). So invading South America without any real rebasing from Japan is possible.

Additionaly you can smash any amount of US forces in Mexico easily. Invade Guatemala, bomb logistically Mexican province Coatzacoalcos to to 0 infra. Here around Guatemala you can now encircle as many US forces without supplies as they coming.

Great point, I was trying to invade a far off land and tried everything or so I thought.

Once I checked my invasion fleets I found that some of my older type Naval units in them had a lot less range than the newer models. Simply combining my fleets into newer models gave me the range I needed to invade. I sent the old outdated ships back to home waters for coastal defense.

From there the invasion went fine.
