How do you get the title Despot?

I managed to get 8 Duchies in the Byzantine Empire, and when I tried to create the Kingdom of Greece I was given the title Despot of Greece. Is it because I am under the Byzantine Emperor still?

Also I would like to get a claim on the Empire but I have no idea at all how to do it.....

And if I dont want to hand the duchies put can I destroy a few of them? then I wont get the too many held duchies bonus

Despot is the Greek flavoured king-tier title. All it requires is to be of Greek culture.

Also I would like to get a claim on the Empire but I have no idea at all how to do it.....

A few methods
- Try marrying into the family to get a claim, declare war with the help of factional allies.
- Try marrying into the family and assassinate folks so that your on track to get a claim or a direct inheritance of the imperial crown
- Keep getting more land until you can usurp the title or something (most challenging)

Yup, just be careful with that. Destroying titles greatly upsets de jure vassals of said titles.
