Personally, not very much a fan of dynastic mottoes being included. As noted previously in the thread, it's more of a late Medieval, early Renaissance trend, making it rather anachronistic in my opinion. That all being said, I think it would be far more tolerable if it were only great houses, as others have proposed, that have mottoes. Players could, of course, give themselves mottoes as well. I just don't want every tiny "dynasty" (in quotations since even courtiers can have dynasties, often of just themself) to have some garbled, procedurally generated saying.

It would in my opinion be cool if the motto would act as a kind of slight modifier to a person's actions.

Like that

Winter is Coming - Makes the character more likely to focus on defensive measures and not partake in risky adventures.

While

Hear Me Roar - Makes the character more likely to react forcefully to insults and slights made in public.

Seems like every house is going to get the generic motto such as "INSERT_NOUN_1, INSERT_NOUN_2, and INSERT_NOUN_3" and "INSERT_ADJECTIVE with INSERT_ITEM in hand".

While some houses did have a motto (such as Habsburg's A.E.I.O.U), reckon most didn't. It feels very ASoIaF inspired and that's great for eventual AGoT mod.
I'd hope for historical mottos and a variety of form for them.

I really want to be able to write my own motto. I don't want it to have any effect on gameplay. I just want it to be something aesthetic (just like a specific coat of arms doesn't have any effect on gameplay, aside from aesthetics.) It would be nice if we could have some game rules to adjust it. I.E. turn it off, limit it to prestigious dynasties, limit it to non-cadet branches, limit it to King-tier and above, so that everyone who isn't comfortable with it can play without it and anyone who wants to limit it can limit it. But only if that's easy to do. And there's no need to create arbitrary modifiers for a motto or force us to take one we don't want. Devs should spend their time on stuff that really matters, imho, like crafting more dynamic events.

(Though having a large number of possible mottos would be good so that AI generated families (the ones that always rise up that never really existed in the world) don't start repeating in the same game at least. And I do wonder if houses like the Karlings and others will have mottos locked or randomly generated.)

To answer the question, I don't care very much. It's flavor and it adds or substract nothing to the gameplay, unlike legacies.

I welcome this full heartedly. Is it historical? Not fully. Does it effect gameplay? No. Is it fun? Yes! Also, I am also a huge ASOIAF fan so I might be biased towards anything that will help the future CK3 mod be even better.

"Doesn't this inn smell like manure?"
House Blackadder "I have a cunning plan."
It might work better if not every house had a motto, but only larger ones. Or ones with a certain prestige. But overall it's nice, even if not entirely historical
I was thinking this might be a nice compromise as well. You can only make a motto when your house reaches a certain level of splendour.

Coats of arms also help to recognize realms, troops dynasties... not exactly gameply, but definetly more than just aesthetics ;)

I think they're an excellent resource for the ASoIaF mod that inevitability doesn't even come close to describing, but besides which, I have little to no interest in them. I assume the bulk of them (if not all) are going to be randomly generated to one degree or another, unless some intrepid designer decided to spend his or her hours hand-crafting thousands of phrases for comital and baronial dynasties, which gives them very little narrative impact in my book. I'm not particularly bothered by their inclusion, but if the option is available to disable them entirely, I would certainly take advantage of it.

Well, yes, you're right of course. But coats of arms don't give you bonuses. There's no mechanical difference between an orange on a white background and a red stag on the same white background. Granted, you might be attached to a certain coat of arms, but the same could be said of a motto.

Edit: Just to be clear, they shouldn't provide you with a mechanical bonus. Neither the motto nor the coat of arms.

If the Inserted_noun somehow affected the gameplay, then yes. For example Insert_Kindness. People of this house are expected to have the kind trait. Those who do not, and especially those who are cruel, go against the very foundation of the dynasty's slogan. And then there might be some repercussions for this, like negative [-] monthly renown. And this would work similar to a decadence system where the Head-dynast guy can force them to adhere to the house's key motto. If they refuse, there might be punishments like being kicked out from the house.
