Seems like every house is going to get the generic motto such as "INSERT_NOUN_1, INSERT_NOUN_2, and INSERT_NOUN_3" and "INSERT_ADJECTIVE with INSERT_ITEM in hand".

While some houses did have a motto (such as Habsburg's A.E.I.O.U), reckon most didn't. It feels very ASoIaF inspired and that's great for eventual AGoT mod.

A little pretentious, but it's flavor. So, why not?

Edit:

But let's face it. We all know what alot of these upcoming features are really about, right?

The great ASOIAF mod to come.

I do feel it's a bit too 'Westeros'y... House mottos were the exception instead of the norm, judging by historical records. Or they were just a colloquial thing that was not often recorded.

Though... I am a big fan of Richard III's personal motto, "loyalté me lie" or 'Loyalty binds me.'

Seems fitting for a man who loved his brother and father-in-law both, but was forced by one to kill the other... and who grew jaded with the love he had for his brother, convincing himself that killing his two nephews was the best thing for the crown and his country.

Having never read or watched GoT, haven't seen the connection. While I'm not familiar with how common family mottos might have been in the medieval era, pretty accustomed to pretentious mottos on anything that wants to portray "legacy" or "history" of their institutions.

So from my modern POV, totally on board with every AI and their horse having mangled Latin or some random English word salad to look profound :p

Meh.

It's mostly a late period fad to have a formal motto. 13th century at best, really more of a 14th century and later thing. Personal mottos date back to at least Roman times, though, and various nobles were definitely using catchy battle cries throughout the Crusader era, so there is some justification.

Dieu et Mon Droit was only formalized as the motto of England by Henry V in the early 15th century, though it was reportedly used by Richard I as a battle cry in 1198. Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense for the Order of the Garter (not a House) is 1348.

In the other hand, the same goes for much of the heraldry, and this sort of thing is usually very moddable if you want them gone (I very much doubt getting rid of mottos is going to break the checksum), so I'm happy to be on board with that angle. Mottos could well switched off with a game rule, which might be the best approach.

Mottos seem really culturally specific to me, and others here have pointed out that they're temporally specific to the late middle ages. I'd say they're a cute feature, but maybe should be an occasionally generated thing rather than universal for every house on the map. Like, should every strategos in the ERE have their own family not? And the game extends way out to the steppes and India, where I'm pretty sure house mottos were never a thing.

I think they're nice flavour. If they just follow a handful of templates such as "X, Y and Z" and "X with Y in hand", I'll probably ignore them very quickly though. Procedural generation of these offers tons of permutations, but it's the 10,000 bowls of oatmeal problem. I'd prefer if I came across mottos which were truly unique e.g. "Hear Me Roar", but that would obviously require more curation. Either way, I think mods will sort them out. Also - think of the meme potential.

I think mottos are the best feature of the whole system.

They're not historical, certainly not universal, but honestly I couldn't care less.

It's fun! To create your own motto, and play your dynasty accordingly. Think of it as the last words of the fouding dynast, long lost in legend. You can imagine each member of your house growing up hearing those words. Some will follow them as an ideal, some will ignore, some will misinterpret, and whether or not your dynasty lives up to its words is ultimately up to you. I know the mottos of other houses will be incoherent gibberish, but how often will I read them? Mottos are simple another way to immerse myself in the story of my house.

I'm excited about it. It's fun. I like fun things.

I had a character many, many years ago who would have been a great dynast, the head of his house and every cadet branch thereof if such things existed in CK2. He would certainly have founded a bloodline had THAT mechanic existed then. The man who took a duchy in Ireland and made it into an Empire during the 87 years of his reign, actively leading his armies until he turned 85. I called him "Old Oak". I pictured an oak planted on the occasion of his succession (when he was only one year old) that grew for the next 400 years in the courtyard of what became the Imperial Palace. Coronations would take place in the shade of the colossal oak tree and every ruler would ask for the strength and wisdom of the man whose name was synonymous with the great tree. (All of this in my imagination, of course. This was long before coronations were a thing.) In my mind the house had a motto. "The greatest strength grows from a heart of oak."

Damn, you should have written an AAR, I'm loving this story. Mottos, however small may their contribution be, definitely help in making these stories.

I wish I had. But it still makes a good story.

I went into his reign figuring he wouldn't accomplish much. In fact, I expected him to die before he reached 16, and there were two attempts on his life, once as an infant, and once as a young child. I never knew who was behind it, but the most likely culprit was his father's younger brother, who was next in line. But he made it through his childhood, got a good education trait (education also worked differently then; I think I had only Sword of Islam and Legacy of Rome. In fact, I'm sure that was it. It was early on in my playing days, and Sunset Invasion hadn't come out yet) and was King of Ireland just a few years later, King of Scotland and Wales before he was 50, and added England and Empire of Britannia just after his 80th birthday. He was wounded in battle at the age of 83, and I finally pulled him from personally leading his armies at 85, after almost 70 years of personally leading his troops in every major campaign. He never grew infirm or incapable, dying peacefully one night at 89, leaving the Empire to his six year-old great great grandson.

There were times when I thought he might never die. And again, this was before you had artifacts or lifestyles that could improve your health. Even with those health improvements though, I've never had a non-immortal character live past 82. And even my immortal character never approached 87 years of rule. (MASSIVE long reign bonus in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and chunks of England.)

The only thing he never did was Crusade. He was kinda busy building an Empire from the ground up.

It might work better if not every house had a motto, but only larger ones. Or ones with a certain prestige. But overall it's nice, even if not entirely historical

I don't think mottos should be unlocked at a certain level of prestige or something like that. "Yesterday you had no motto, but now you've reached the prestige, time to pick a motto!" Doesn't feel right. And the game can't necessarily determine what time it would be appropriate roleplaying-wise for you to pick a motto. I think the option to leave it blank should exist, and perhaps a game option to limit mottos to Duke-tier or King-tier and above or something like the same. You can add your motto whenever you wish once you've reached the appropriate tier, or, if not restricted by level, whenever you feel something significant has happened in the narrative to deserve a motto.

But as it's just an aesthetic thing I don't think it's harmful. I'm excited to come up with one for my first run. (Which will either be in Ireland or England, depending on the starting dates available.)

Plus, it would make for a cool experience. Player assassinates a bunch of people across multiple generations, then gets some starter motto like "Only God May Judge" or something. Like, ooh, you're the bad guys now
