I was just wondering what you think about Panama, Suez and Kiel. Personally I like them in Vicky 2, but I don't think that early modern engineering was advanced enough to justify addition of those canals to EUIV and I would prefer more time period appropriate canals. I hope that if they add those canals they also extend the timeline to 1914.

If Europe can make viable long-term colonies in North America by 1480 and have a CN set up by 1500 and have Spain in Siberia in this game, canals shouldn't cause anybody to bat an eye.

Besides, from an engineering standpoint only Panama is a tough one to sell with the time's technology, and that's just as much from a low lack of demand (really a combination of the period's poor tech and simply not enough demand to merit it).

People of the era didn't consider Panama or Suez as realistic solutions. Sure they dreamed about those, but always rejected the idea as impractical if not outright impossible. In case of Schleswig-Holstein they actually did build a canal, but it wasn't the Kiel Canal. So, the canal should use the route and name of historical Danish Ejderkanalen rather than the later canal which was built by the German Empire.

I think it's a stupid idea. EU4 has many flaws and CoP only added to that. I've been playing EU3 instead and I doubt I'll be buying any further DLC if Paradox continues adding stuff like this.

They're fine. It's a minor addition that will likely affect no one since I doubt the AI will ever be in a position to build them. It's not like the player will be forced to. I look forward to see what modders do with them as it means that they can add new province specific works.

Kiel and Suez would be viable, IMHO, although probably only very late in the game. Panama, however... I don't see it being feasible.

Personally, I am more interested in how they dubbed it "The Great Project" which to me indicate they will add something more along this line...

About the canals themselves, well I rarely see anyone (beside player) amass 20k ducats and that alone make me sure that we'll almost certainly not seeing any canals built then add the tech requirement and I think only player who either have conquered significant amount of the world or really wish to built canals that will see these canals...
Then again, I only play small not european nations so far (only play Portugal once to see how the gameplay is)...

Multiple nations from the time of ancient Egypt to Napoleon considered it a realistic solution and tried (in many cases succeeded) at building the suez canal.

Anyway, this discussion has been had, I doubt anyone will come up with new arguments:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?765649-NEW-Decisions-in-WoN-STRANGE

I think you are confusing the actual Suez Canal with the Canal of the Pharaohs which was from Nile to Red Sea. Those are different things.

And Napoleon abandoned the project to build the Suez Canal, because the French thought it was impossible task to complete.

And Napoleon abandoned the project to build the Suez Canal, because the French thought it was impossible task to complete.

I have had this argument on the thread I linked, read it please.

I am not confusing them, I am comparing them. There was a canal from the Red Sea to the Nile built/rebuilt by the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Arab Caliphate, it served exactly the same purpose as the Suez canal and was the same size as the Suez canal was when it was originally built. In fact, a canal from the Nile to the Red Sea is actually harder to build because it is fresh water to sea and therefore requires locks, whilst the Suez is free flowing seawater and therefore just a hole in the ground.

The reason Napoleon didn't build a Med-Red sea canal was the same reason as all those before him, his engineers did not accurately measure the sea level difference. Napoleon thought it was impossible because his engineers told him the sea level difference was 10 metres, rather than an almost negligible difference as it actually is, requiring building locks (which are expensive). Had he been given accurate measurement, he would have built it.

Now that we get unrealistic canals, can we please also have unrealistic colonizeable areas in Canada please? Those grey holes in my colonies just look ugly as hell.
