How do you directly save your game to the computer, can you still get achievements, and can/how do you transfer them from one computer to another?

Achievements are controlled by Steam. Anywhere you log into your steam account you'll be able to show your achievements.

To get achievements in HOI4 you have to play ironman. This means there is one save made by the computer and you're not allowed to create your own. The game will auto save every so often & anytime you quit the game.

Sidenote - I really wish they would rename the "exit" button to "save & exit" in ironman.

You can get round these limitations if you really want but that sort of negates the whole point of achievements so I wont go into them here.

You can play normally and save as much as you want (useful for going back and trying different strategies, or just in case before trying a big decision) if you play without ironman turned on but you wont be able to get achievements in such a game.

Thank you but I was more referring to what Alex the Rambler does, the thing I wanted to know is how do you do what he does and can you still get achievements.

I don't know who Alex the Rambler is. Anyhow, games saved in the Steam cloud are available from anywhere on any computer as long as you can connect and sign in to Steam, so that is the first and preferred option as it is far simpler and less error-prone than the local method.

If you want to save locally and transfer your saved games to another computer manually, you can follow the steps described below. The following example use Ironman games, since you want to get achievements, but the procedure is the same with non-Ironman, regular games.

Step 1: When you are prompted to save your game, select the Local option instead of the Cloud option. As shown in this screenshot:

Setup.png

The Ironman game above is saved under the name 'Ironman Soviet Union 1'.

Step 2: Exit from HOI 4 completely. Go to your Documents folder in Windows Explorer, then navigate inside to Paradox Interactive > Hearts of Iron IV > save games. This will look like this screenshot, althought the contents of your folder will be different:

SaveGames1.png

You can see there is the 'Ironman Soviet Union 1' game that was saved in Step 1.

Step 3: Make a copy of the saved game that you want to transfer somewhere else. Don't move the local saved game directly - if you mess up, you could lose it, and since it's local, you don't have a cloud backup of it any more. As shown in this screenshot:

SaveGames2.png

You can rename the copy if you wish. Transfer the copy to the other computer via any available and suitable means, and put it in the same location: Documents > Paradox Interactive > Hearts of Iron IV > save games.

Step 4: Restart HOI 4. Load the copy of the saved game to resume your game. As shown in this screenshot:

LoadGame.png

Again you need to have the Local tab selected instead of the Cloud one.

Notes about Achievements:
- The above procedure should still allow you to get achievements since the game still recognizes the saved game as an achievement-compatible Ironman game after loading it. But I can't vouch for it because I almost never play Ironman and don't care for achievements in HOI 4.

This is really helpful, thank you. There is only one problem, I can’t manually save on Ironman for some reason. How did you do it?

You can't manually save, I can't either - that's expected in Ironman mode.

You are prompted once to save when you start a new Ironman game. Afterwards the Ironman game is saved automatically every time you exit the game, overwriting the previous save. If you want to save at a certain point in time, you need to quit the game. And then you can make a copy of the game save at that point in time, like a kind of snapshot that you can reload at will.

In my example, I quit the game on 1 Feb. 1936.

You can only manually save if you exit the game, since in Ironman it saves on exit. Then copy the save how you like, and restart the game.

You can manually save an ironman game by just loading the exact same save (slightly faster than quitting the game, restart the launcher and the game i guess)

And btw @Mousetick do you happen to know why for me I cant save on cloud (Cant click on the cloud button, at all)? I am so confused about this thread because I was never able to do anything BUT to save locally.

I don't understand what you mean. Saving by loading? If you load a save game, it had to be saved beforehand. And loading it does not save it. I'm confused :)

Make sure the Steam cloud synchronization box is checked on the Updates tab of the game properties in the Steam client:

When you exit an ironman game, it will save automatically. So when you ask the system to load any game files, it will have to first save that ironman game, then load your intended file. And if your intended file is the ironman game, you are practically saving then immediately loading it, in one go.

Thanks for the info, will have a try!

I see what you mean, you're talking about using "Exit to Menu" rather than "Exit Game". Yes, it's faster than exiting the game back to Windows and then restarting it via Launcher.

Nope.

Load game. Then load the exact same file that you are playing.

Try it (it might be a bug if it only works for me lol!)

Yes, sorry for being slow :) It seems so strange at first, but you're right, it works exactly like you said - and it has to, otherwise it wouldn't be Ironman anymore. It's a bit confusing because in the Load panel where it shows the list of game saves, the date of the current Ironman game save that is shown is that of the last autosave, not the current date. But it does load exactly where you left off, at the correct date and time.

It's faster indeed compared to all the other options.
