I'm guessing radar stations and SAMs of some sort, but I've gotten that far into the game and I'd like to be ready for when I do.

P.S. I'd be grateful for some advice on IC location, should you centralize your factories in certain locations for easy defence, or spread it out so it can't be nuked/bombed in one go?

I don't know about defending against ICBM's (haven't got that far either) but when I build IC as Germany I spread it around and put it in the provinces that have the smallest amounts. Concentrating IC makes a nice target for enemy bombers as witness to allied bomber attacks primarily on Essen and sometimes a strike at Berlin. Keep Interceptors handy with lots of radar.

What does radar do exactly? And are there any vital doctrines I should research with the radar technology itself?

As far as I know, there is no way to defend against rockets of any sort (rockets BM's and ICBM's, but not flying bombs) because they have 100 Ground and Air defence

Well, even real life high tech countries today have trouble theoretically intercepting ICBMs which were designed with a post 70-s level of technology. And even then only when the number of missiles launched is not very large. What can you possibly expect in WW2?

The only real way to defend against them, is to not allow the enemy to build nuclear arms in the first place. Just like in HoI:II ARMA, whoever gets nukes first, tends to win. It's extremely difficult to fight a nation that has nukes and win, you've got dissent hits, massive IC loss, massive manpower drain if it hits a stack of units.

If you can Nuke Albuquerque or land invade it from Mexico, USA ALWAYS builds reactors there. Problem is, it is smart since its very very hard to attack.

Nuke the other nations reactor site to stop their nuclear production. Only way to guarantee no more ICBM's attacking you after the initial bunch.

Also the Ai seems to like nuking large concentrations of troops instead of IC...

in my last game with the soviet union i tried to build a big rocket arsenal. things I discovered:
1. no defense against ICBM (as already said above).
2. the best way to bomb your enemies down to nothing. one icbm is sufficient to bring the IC of a province down to zero. having in mind the enormous range, that means that enough missiles could bring down anybody to almost zero IC in just one or two days making it impossible to restore supplies or reinforce troops. so you even don't need the nukes and can take them for braking the front lines.

Take over all the usa airbases or occupy alberqery something (usa is the only ai programmed to build nukes)
I keep being told SOV has ai code for it too.

I've actually used ICBM's before and launched like 20 nukes against a country and the ai somehow recovered (well...more like my ai ally on that front didn't bother attacking the nuked units and I had no navy at all so I couldn't send any help to them), 70 stack units on provinces is hard to counter without my nukes.

Says wouldnt it be cool to be able to repel ICBMs with your own missiles?

I am not asking for graphics like that^, but missiles could do the scramble mission like interceptors and try to catch those pesky nukes.

I read an article saying how the planned defense against V2's and V1's were to fire thousands of anti-air cannons into the air in hopes of hitting V1/V2. It is insanely hard to accurately hit an ICBM in time, especially with the limited computing power of the time (time required to calculate accurate intercept trajectories, not to mention the radar needed and communication systems. At best, you'd have to have some sort of laser/missile burst that would be very wasteful and costly with a small chance to intercept the missile.
