Hi!

I have run into a problem when conquering large number of enemy provinces: The admin point costs for coring them seems to be staggering. Then again, this forum is full of people who have apparently build giant empires while they still manage to avoid being at admin tech 18 in 1800. What is the trick? There has to be some kind of trick. Is it force-vasallizing and annexing later? But how does this work with larger enemies who are just to big to force-vasallize without taking away most of their provinces first. Please, help me.

This ^

sadly vassal feeding is really the only way to do it

how exactly are you doing here?

i understand releasing nations but how (and when) do you 'feed' them
i didn't think you could feed them at the same time as releasing them
and by 'feed' do you mean sell
and when you say annex them again do you mean diplomatically

what is the process here?

thanks

they must be your vassal first.

best situation is when you have vassal, and an enemy country has cored territory belonging to the vassal

dow the enemy holding your vassal's cores, and demand return cores to your vassal. (you get zero AE points because the world thinks you're just a good guy returning cores to your vasssal)

then you just annex vassal diplomatically.

second scenario is simply demanding land from normal peacedeal, and selling the new land to your vassal, in peacetime (usually needs to be either same religion, or same culture, or accepted culture) AI vassal will eventually pay it's own admin points to core the land. Then after some time you annex vassal diplomatically, you receive cores yourself for no added cost.

It's not that "awesome" mechanic unless you talk about the first case scenario, whereyou are fighting wars to return cores to your vassal. You can get really fast and easy expansion with this tactic.
For example, I had horde in my muscovy game which was down to one province (nogai was the horde). I fought a quick war to force vassalize nogai.

Then I dowed all the other hordes, one by one, demand return cores to Nogai. After a while, nogai was back to it's gigantic former self. Then I annexed all the territory after a couple years. I quickly converted religion to orthodox but all lands were my cores.

There are a couple similar yet marginally different approaches to expanding without spending admin points.

1. Release a vassal in land you control (can be either cored or uncored land) and sell the vassal land as you expand. The vassal will core provinces for you. After you are done with said vassal, diploannex. Note that a vassal, when released will get all of its cores except your capital, if applicable. If there are no dead (nonexistent) nations with cores in your country, you cannot release a vassal.

The methodology goes like this. Say I am Hungary. If I want to expand into the Balkans I would go to war with a Balkan minor (a country the can be force-vassilized in one war) and vassilize them. Say I vassilize Bosnia. Then I would go to war with Serbia, take a couple provinces, and sell them to Bosnia who will core them for me.

It is also possible to diplomatically vassilize a nation and then proceed to "feed them."

If you happen to be in an area without any minors, you should take a province and then release as vassal. For instance, say the ottomans own the Balkans. I go to war with the ottomans, take one province, say Serbia, then release Serbia as a vassal and proceed to feed them.

2. Core return is the most effective albeit limited availability method of conquest. Say I am russia and I want to expand into Lithuania. Attack Lithuania, find a province with a Ukrainian core and then take it. After the war, release as vassal. In the proceeding wars, return cores (option in the peace screen) to Ukraine. The reason this is so effective is you get 0 aggressive expansion for returning cores.

A few things to note:
-The proper strategy combines both of these methods
-important info from a post of mine in another thread:
A vassal will never accept any more provinces after it hits 24% overextension (=6 cumulative base tax). However it will always accept a province (assuming same culture or religion) when it has any less than that. So, say you take 5, 1 base tax provinces and 1 8 base tax province. If you feed it the 8 base tax province first, it will not accept any others. However, if you sell it 5, 1 base tax provinces it will accept and still be under the threshold thus it will accept the 8 base tax province as well.

This extends to any other combination as well. 1 3 tax + 1 2 tax + 1 17 tax = accept (in that order).
1 6 tax + 1 1tax = reject second province due to overextension.

Plan accordingly.

-There's lots to understand about core timers that I don't really want to explain in detail. TheBloke is the defacto forum expert on this topic. There are several threads where he has explained them. If this doesn't seen important, I'll give you an example. It's 1750 and Austria got a PU with Hungary which is now fully integrated. I go to war with Austria, take one province. At this point Hungary has cores on all of de jure Hungary. Release Hungary as a vassal, at the next tick (beginning of next month) ALL of hungary's cores will be gone.

These vassal feeding method is so notable that I think it should be included in the official guides or FAQs to help newer player. Of course, assuming PI doesn't plan any major revision in regards with it for the future patches.

This. I hate to admit it, but it's a core part of playing right now, although the supposed AE changes in 1.4 make me hopeful.

This part can get a bit hairy sometimes, but mostly because of bugs I think. Say for example, you DoW Ming, take 3 provinces and release Xi, Zhou, and Shun... All of Xi's cores disappear the very instant you release them every time. The good ol' core disappearing bug can really ruin a game in this fashion.

You shouldn't release them immediately. Just deal with the OE and release them on the first day of a month and the second day DoW any nations holding the most of their cores. So if you have a province for XI, Zhour and Shun then it's very easy to get all of the cores for them as Ming hold them all. One idea is to take the lowest possible base tax provinces for those nations so that you do not get so much OE while you wait for the truce to end. Or just take th -5 stab hit and WE and DoW immediately after peace and release.

Two problems I have feeding vassals:
1) No one will accept anything in the HRE and it so happens, most of the provinces you want are in the HRE
2) When you have a vassal that has cores in other nation's provinces and want to fight for return core demands, you don't always (usually don't) get that option in the sue for peace dialog. I assume said vassal has to occupy the province themselves and your allies tend to get there first, especially with tiny vassals.

thanks for the extra info - this is all really useful - particularly as its sort of a hidden mechanic that the casual player like me might miss completely

one other question - ok, i've fed my vassal and then want to diplo-annex - is there a limit on how many regions of one country you can diplo annex, and does it get harder to do the more regions they have?

iff its your vassal and you have good enough relations with them 190+, vassal has been your vassal for over x amount of time, and both countries are at peace, they will accept vassalization no matter the size of the vassal country.

sometimes though you cannot easily get to the required 190+ relations (like wrong religion for the vassal). The vassal is same religion as you only if you manually annex a country, and after peace deal, go to the country options, and craete vassal. Must be done in peacetime. Also you get same religion vassal if you have even only one core, (of the future vassal to be created) and then you create the vassal. (notice that you cannot create the vassal, if the same country exists already somewhere on the map, e.g. if their territories became totally disconnected, its hard to see immediately)
