How do you convert steam mods to non-steam mods?

I like playing the game with the maximum size map but like everybody else, the game slows down after 200 years or so. I heard playing without steam speeds the game up but I can no longer use steam mods. They all come in .zip forms and I can't unzip the .mod files. Does anyone know if anything can be done?
