How do you completely control so many duchies without going over demesne limit?

I'm playing as Konstantinos V, and planning to do a Rome campaign. But the conditions listed seem impossible to fulfill.

"Completely control Athens"... Ok, Athens is within my realm's borders, but it's listed as not being under my complete control....

I need to completely control far more duchies than my demesne limit would ever allow.

It doesn't need to be in your demense.
More than likely one of the individual cities/bishoprics/baronies in The duchy of Athens is independent or under another rulers control. Check each holding in those counties for one that isn't under your control.

Nope, all of em under byzantine control. Iconoclast control unfortunately... How do I get Konstantinos to lose the zealous trait and then, how do I revoke the iconoclast patriarchate?

Pick learning focus, build the obsevatory and study the stars. You get cynical from it. You can then get rid of the heresy, and reinstall the ecumenical patriarch. You don´t need conclave, but you need WoL to do this.

Otherwise, go hunting, hold summer fairs, make a pilgrimage. You get a variety of traits from it. If you have more than 5 traits, you will randomly lose some of them. Hope that you will lose zealous from it.

If that doesnt work too, hope your ruler dies soon. His son shouldn´t be zealous.

Religious differences shouldn't matter. Just ran a few tests and I still had full control of Athens after granting holdings to other religions.

To satisfy the condition you need to control every holding in Atheniai, Hellas, and Demetrias. For example in the picture below I do not actually control every holding in Hellas. The bishopric is independent. If you do control every holding it sounds like a bug.

Oh ok, I guess it updated. I now have full control over Athens even though a Strategos is in charge of it. Speaking of which, is there anything I should be aware of? I just passed elective succession and for the moment my son has 23 votes in his favor... but I worry about compromising that, and I fear that firing Iconoclast bishops will infuriate my vassals, who themselves are currently iconoclasts.

If you have Medium Crown Authority or higher (or whatever the Conclave equivalent is) you can freely revoke heretic and infidel titles without penalty (though a dev mentioned a possible patch to this in the Suggestions forum recently).

However, an alternative solution would be to just stay Iconoclast and work on converting provinces to Iconoclasty. Iconoclasty, Paulicianism, and Monothelism can all mend the Great Schism, too.

Elective Monarchy can be tricky. However, of all empires the Byzantine and Roman Empire are best suited to it thanks to Born In the Purple. Making your vassals angry is still dangerous though.
