How do you colonise?

This is my first time playing the game. I'm playing as Rome and want to colonise liguria and bonica above Rome's starting provinces.

How do I go about this? The colonise button is greyed out! It says there's too many barbarians but when I send an army in there's no one to fight. And there isn't an "attack the natives" button in this as far as I can see. (unlike EU3)

So what do I do? Please help.

You need to station an army in province which you want to colonize. In addition, your province should have civilization rating at 50% or higher and that province should have at least 10 units of population as well. At Vae Victis computer will notify you when this is possible.

Then you will send troops and you must wait. Local barbarians will not take up arms at once but sooner or later they will take attack against your army. Defeat that army as fast as possible. After that attack there will be one unit of barbarians at that province. Now you colonize that province.

I found it easier to Rome the country side.

Move your army in provinces that belong to that region.

You will find them and defeat them.

As an addition to earlier comments, beware if Massilia no longers pays tribute to you. As long as state is a tributary it can't colonize, but if it's free then it will try to colonize Liguria if they have higher civ rating and better governor.

The only reason to have Massillia to not pay tribute is to annex them.
