How do you Annex Japan?

Euh...I'm not sure if you can change your state religion, I mean through any possible way to do this and keep the achievement active, since I think diplo-annexation is available within the religion groups, say you are Animist you can so diplo annex Shamanist and Animist but not Shinto

In my case there was not too much to be noticed if I understand the mechanic correctly, I was Ming, after conquering neighbouring nations I became enough strong, I found that the proper japan is de facto an OPM, so I sent some gift and ask if they wanna be my vassal, they accepted and 10 years after I annexed

the only detail I found maybe useful here is that "once the emperor itself does no longer exist, all daimyos will became a normal state as all the others"

if you can shift yourself into eastern Asia religion group(Buddhism/Confucism/Shinto/Hindu), IMO that wont be a problem for you to achieve diplo-annexing the emperor, then daimyos will be just a case of time

Euh you may make them animist...
As we may all have seen, in AI-controlling-nations level rebels can force convert through different religion groups, if I understand correctly... I once had released an orthodox Qara Kunnyu as vassal and then the rebels just made them back to shi'ite, maybe this will work in east asia too.

So
try colonize Hokkaido and sell it to Japan the emperor, then wait a rebel to fire, if all my hypothesis is correct, you will have a animist Japan, then do what I did as Ming

And the best way to conquer Japan is to let Japan form and then conquer it. Use force vassal and other stuff to do this. Make sure you don't vassalize the shogun though.

Japan has never formed in any of my games, so I really don't know what to do.

Perhaps save-reload until it magically works.

Before the shogun unite it, japan does exist in game, watch carefully you will find it in Kyoto, an OPM named "Japan", then just check what I said above if that works

Oh dear. I wasn't aware of any problems with this. I just took a large swath of Tairan lands in the north and assumed I would be able to pickup where I left off in 5 years.. I think taking the last province of one of the daimyo was an option (Or appeared to be.) I'm not really sure what the "status" of Japan is as a whole in my game though, are there circumstances where they can be annexed without issue?

Well, I can't remember now. But I know that I somehow became muslim or christian as Shawnee before DW.

Maybe I accepted a new religion in a peace offer dunno.

I'm still trying to give Japan a province that is Animist. I had to reload a save back to 1657 and switched my slider to Narrowminded (getting zero missionaries a year atm), I may try to change my religion to Shinto simultaneously by giving a missionary a job in Japan with zero funding, then falling into rebel demands to switch religion (not sure if it works with Animist nations, but we'll see).

Well, that didn't work, can't give in to the Zealots since I'm not Oriental. Hopefully Japan will be able to go Animist, though I doubt it...

You can change their religion and annex them. But you must install DW 5.0 to do it. Otherwise the cost for vassalization will be too high (don´t forget to backup your save before you uninstall the game to reinstall):

I am not done with my Rykuku WC yet, but I managed to annex Japan. I both forced converted to Sunni and changed culture. But the exploit will probably work for you too, so long as you control all CoTs so they can´t trade.

The bankruptcy modifier will last for 5 years. So you may have to DOW them during a peace treaty, taking a -5 Stab hit. What I am saying is don´t miss the opportunity when they finally go bankrupt. It is somewhat tricky to vassalize them, but was more easily done than the solution I posted for the broken Jihad achievement two weeks ago.

By the way, there may be an easier way to annex Japan. But I wasn't able to find one.

Not being able to annex Japan is definitely a bug.



Edit: You are above the infamy limit. So don´t forget to release some vassals to lower it or otherwise Japan will refuse annexation after 10 years.

I want the achievement, that's why I can't downgrade back to v5.0. I'm 5.1 now, 'else I couldn't get the achievement.

How can I force Japan to unify? I can't Tag switch, else the achievement will not spark.

Pick a daiymo and feed it all the provinces, preferably the one in charge.

Wait, if you switch them to animist, can't you just take their territory?

I described exactly how I did it and my game is still valid for achievements. Otherwise my post would not have been an answer to your question, now would it? You did ask how to annex Japan to get the Ryukyu WC achievement, did you not?

In any case, take a backup of your 5.1 save game to be one the safe side. Just because this worked for me there is no 100 % guarantee that it will work for you.

And by the way, you are not going to force religion upon them as a peace deal. You are going to sell them an animist province, take Kyoto from them, make them go bankrupt and make their government break by funding rebels. As long as they are bankrupt and an OPM when they break, they will become the religion of that province. I strongly suggest that you actually read how I did it and do it yourself, if you want that achievement.
