"deus vult" was just declared and there's a "crusades expectation" of -.01 in my piety icon.

i'm currently at war with a small muslim country.

what are the "expectations" and when do they change?

As far as I remember, the crusade expectation, is a way to show that the Pope expects you to go crusading. As long as the Crusade is running, you will get the piety loss. I think it increases with time.

The only way to balance it out would be to conquer some muslim/pagan territory which yields piety ... or to hand out bishoprics.

Actually being at war with the muslims doesn't change the expectations penalty. I think the mechanics were made so you would "have" to go and actually fight (and win) in the infidel lands.

I am not sure if the piety bonus for beating infidels is higher during the Crusade.

The rule is that the bigger you are the higher the piety-loss because of crusade-expectations is. Also if your ruler has the crusader trait then the piety-penalty will be higher.

No, matter what you do you will still have the penalty. But the this penalty can be off-set by

1. Increase church donations
2. Building religious buildings, which give a one-time bonus and monthly-piety. Though the last point isn't listed in the tooltip.
3. Having non-christian provinces in your demesne also lowers the penalty
4. Creating bishops, give a one-time piety bonus
5. Events which give one-titme piety bonuses
6. There are also buildings (moneylenders) which give you a monthly piety-penalty, this penalty isn't shown in a tooltip.

What size do you need to be to suffer the penalty? I've got a duchy and suffered 0 piety loss even though my duke had the crusader trait and was catholic.
