Does appointing a cupbearer or a food taster make any effect really? I always thought they were just ceremonial titles, ie honorary titles in the game, that the only effect they had was giving a relations boost (which can be crucial at times, admittedly). Do they effect your state intirgue or whatever?

Well, at least getting a spymaster or cupbearer into an assassination plot does have quite some effect in terms of plot power

One of the most amusing things they've done is when they killed my heir.

I was the duke of Meath at the time. (if you're wondering: I'd married to a muslim woman with enormously big stats, and gave her wardship over my heir. I forgot to convert her to christianity first, and by the time I realised it it was too late. And I kinda wanted to see how this trainwreck would play out. The Assassins did me a favour, in a way, by removing that heir, and thus avoiding muslim-ruler-in-scotland-issues.

Of course they're after you. You have the Apple of Eden. You're able to see the entire map of Europe and scour the counties for specific individuals and see into their souls for their true worth.

Lol this made me think that someone should create a "Hashashin's creed" mod, where the Apple of Eden is treated like swords in game of thrones and you encounter frequent assassination attempts! XD

I've lost a few courtiers to they as the Byz Empire. What is their real purpose? I mean... its not like they ask me for money to keep their knives away from my court.

I think their main purpose is to serve as a muslim holy order. And to kill as many courtiers as possible, evidently. :)

Does appointing a cupbearer or a food taster make any effect really? I always thought they were just ceremonial titles, ie honorary titles in the game, that the only effect they had was giving a relations boost (which can be crucial at times, admittedly). Do they effect your state intirgue or whatever?

I don't know if having a cup bearer and food taster does actually do something about assassination attempts, but I do know that there are certain honorific titles that have a somewhat larger influence than just improved relations. If you are playing as a Muslim, there is one title (not sure what it is called, should get back to these games soon) that makes one of your vassals the primary judge on religious matters. I think he needs to be an educated theologian and I had bot events where somebody was angry with me because I didn't appoint anybody to this office as well as events where somebody told me to appoint someone else since he or she felt my choice was sub-par.

Yeah, that's Chief Qadi, and it's an exception and not really in the same category than the regular Keepers of the Swans and Court Calligraphers. I still doubt that Cupbearers and Food Tasters have more game effects than the relation boosts and possibly tiny boosts in prestige etc. Will have to check this in the game though, if the tooltip says anything about them.

Of course it's for your advantage that your spymaster likes you a lot, so making him Cupbearer or whatsoever is naturally handy because of the boost relations. But I still doubt that the title itself has an effect to thwart assassintion attempts etc. Of course it should, when we think what cupbearers and food tasters actually do (or did in real history) but I doubt the game is that smart. I might be wrong though. Somebody said they can add plot power seriously. Have to check this, too, that it isn't caused by their high intrigue.
