I'm France, its 1600 and I've been eyeing Savoy, Unfortunately all I can do is eye as whenever I declare war on Savoy I'm up against half of Europe (the HRE). Any ideas here ? Thx.

You could beat them? You should be able to as France. What are your NIs?

One other strategy is to see who Savoy is allied with. If they have an ally outside of the HRE, feel free to declare war on that country.

Wait until the majority of the HRE is in a war, conquer said territory while HRE is busy and revoke it from HRE. Now be ready for the HRE to come back for it at some future date if they are capable. In my Poland game or rather now Commonwealth game I routinely pick apart the HRE as it fights for Italian and Mediterranean dominance. You just need to be smart and bide your time really. Also it might be wise to see who is a rival of the dominate country(ies) within the HRE is and become best buds with them as well. A multifront war is ideal for the bigger countries, especially HRE.

Also, some nice allies can help you. Like Castille, Poland, Denmark or Sweden. And of course minor allies/vassals.

Enemy troops will enter the lands of your allies, meaning less trouble for you.

Tried cozying up to Austria's enemies via alliances, but then ... they made a bunch of suicidal attacks as allies which killed my warscore .. and .. i got dragged into a bunch of wars as jr partner. Am I missing something here ? Sorry to be noob on this, but cozy up or ally with enemies of the Emperor ? Thanks ...

You just need to pick your allies wisely and yes dont just cozy up ally them and try not to pick any bellicose ones like you said that will drag you into senseless wars. You're goal is to time everything and get HRE into a multifront war or wait for them to get into a multifront war. Muscovy/Russia is usually a good bet or even Poland/Lithuania if they're still around. Did you check out the main partners in the HRE were and see if they had any common rivals? You want to go cozy up to their most formidable rivals and again timing is everything usually. It might even take a couple wars of you wearing them down, weakening them and making the other surrounding countries bold enough to pounce for their own purposes.

Castille and/or Aragon usually have an Italian ambition mission so they could potentially help you there keeping the HRE busy down in Italy while you take care of business on the Western Front. So I mean the allies you seek could be your neighbors and not necessarily the HRE's Rivals I'm just trying to give you some ideas of how to go tackling the HRE.
