How do I return volunteers back home if the war is not over?

I sent a bunch of Volunteers to China and also to a couple of the Warlords. After 2 years of fighting, they earned many commander traits and lots of Army and Air XP.

Unlike in Spain, I can't win the war for them with my small band of troops, so I'm ready to head back home now, even though the war is still raging.

I don't see a "recall Volunteers" button on the Diplomacy screen, and I can't seem to march my troops back manually either. It seems I can still delete the divisions, or switch them to a tiny replacement template (like my default Cav division). But that wouldn't let me keep the Seasoned level experience they have all acquired in battle.

Am I missing something?

You basically don't unless you end up at war yourself (in which case the volunteers automatically return). The thing is that HOI4 tries to simulate volunteers being independent of the countries sending them (in an abstract way) but also needs a way to make it fun and engaging so they give you direct control over your volunteer units

The is a MOD - Recall Volunteers - out there in the Steam Workshop. It will not change vanilla in any other way, just adds the option in the diplomacy screen.

Your only vanilla option (outside of getting into a war yourself) is just to delete the troops: you'll lose the experience, but you get back all the equipment/manpower. It's disappointing, but not the end of the world.

You can however bring back your planes.

Yeah I would just park your divisions somewhere save, and just wait till your declare war yourself, then you get your seasoned divisions back

Thanks for all the quick replies. I think using the option of declaring my own war sounds the best.

I will park the troops in Sinkiang until Chiang Kai-shek manages to lose the war to Japan.

Something that needs to be added with more diplomacy options is [recall volunteers]

HOI4 is a game that must be modded because the devs cant put in simple things like this

Just a footnote to this helpful suggestion: Do not use them to guard ports (even though the Chinese AI is terrible at this) unless you are guarding at least one, better two tiles on each flank. I had a similar situation and lost a couple of Turkish volunteer divisions guarding Shanghai and Pusan after large Japanese landings cut them off and snapped them up when I wasn't paying attention.
