So I'm rather new to this game but after watching several LPs and tutorial series, I know what I'm doing and I love this game. However, the Petty King of Mercia died without a son so it went to his daughter. The King was awesome and had great stats and was loved by the council and vassals. The Queen, however, was disfigured by war and disease and she's disliked by EVERYONE. I'm trying to start a war to claim Norfolk but the council won't allow me, so I need to make way for a more agreeable ruler. Any suggestions?

Alternatively, I could just disobey the council's wishes but I'll be seen as a tyrant. I don't know what the consequences will be for that and I'm playing Ironman so I don't want to mess up this whole game.

Thank you, everyone! This community has been incredibly helpful to me

If you are depressed then you can commit suicide. Other than that there are only a few rare events that give you a handy "kill me" option, if you are really unpopular you could hope that you get assassinated. Having a low intrigue is important then and you should appoint a spymaster who hates you so that he will try to plot against you (spymasters have incredible plot power against their liege). Other than that you might try to lead armies in battle as there is always a small chance (greater if you are brave, smaller if you are a coward) that you get yourself killed that way. Finally traits that lower your health will increase the chance that you die a natural death so try and gather as many diseases as possible and get stressed.

Hi, another newbie here. One way that I know of is if your character is depressed. Right clicking on his/her portrait will give you commit suicide option - I think it comes with some penalties to opinion that will transfer to the heir though, but I am not sure.

Do you use way of life? If so, I believe stewardship focus will increase the chances of getting depressed or at least stressed which will reduce your health.

Thank you guys. I do use WoL but I already chose a focus for her :/. I will, however, appoint a new spymaster. That's good advice.

What about just disobeying the council and going to war? Will that have serious consequences?

It will make your vassals hate you and make it very likely that your council revolts against you, could work if you intend to have your character assassinated but it is probably not worth it.

Try to buy favor of your council. You need at least 3 of them to start a war.

Your heir will inherit part of predecessor's opinion and suiciding also give more negative opinion so it won't help much if your goal is to crown more agreeable ruler.

If you're worried about your council not letting you wage war:
-Fire them. Replace them with random courtiers, then declare your war or request their support. Once you get what you want, you can replace them with your previous court. If you want.
-Go against them anyways. If they hate you so much, an extra bit of Tyranny won't hurt too bad. It's just a -10 opinion malus, so a gift or marrying your family into theirs can mitigate that.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I went the suicide route

One more question though. I'm trying to form the Kingdom of England and the only thing standing in my way is that I don't hold 3 duchies. How do I get these duchies?

Thanks again

Conquest, generally. Have your chancellor head into the duchies you don't control and start fabricating claims. Sometimes, you'll get a claim on the duchy itself but even if you only get a claim on the county, 51% of the de jur duchy will allow you to usurp the title.

So just so I understand, I fabricate claims on duchies in my own lands? Or someone else's?

Someone else's. Although if you do get a claim on a vassal duchy then that makes it easier for you to revoke it without gaining tyrrany. try and gain over 50 % of a de jure duchy and you can create it (although it does cost quite a bit of money).
