I started up my game as the USA, and freed New England from the U.S. The only problem is... I can't do anything as a satellite of the U.S. My plans were to go to war with Canada (who I also freed from the UK... freed basically everyone) to gain Caribou to complete New England, and then become a reclusive power until the U.S. civil war, at which point I would begin to capture the south by being the 'ally' of the U.S. Then I'd declare war on the U.S. to capture the eastern seaboard, and bam, I have my Socialist New England.

However, none of this is possible if I'm a satellite of the U.S.

If I were to search within the save game, how could I make myself no longer a satellite of the U.S.? Is there another way to make it so I'm free besides this if it's not possible?

Thanks for the help.

Without editing the files, the only way is to grow into a GP yourself, and then take yourself out of the US's sphere. I read it usually takes about 50 years for the official break to occur after you reach the bottom GP rung.

Ouch. So basically half the game? Just for the record, I edited the files to give myself all technologies (I always play my first game with some sort of cheats, as I like to take small nations, particularly my 'nation' if it can be played, and make it great) so already I am the 4th most influential nation, but not yet a great power. Perhaps the split would come faster if I can make it to the top of the chain?

EDIT: Oh, and appreciated :)

Pause the game, open console switch to a country and make it declare war on your overlord with the release puppet casus-beli. Switch to your overlord and make a peace offer accepting the other country's demands. Switch back to the country you declared war with and accept peace offer. Switch to your country. You can do this on day one while pause and is much less messy. Well yes you ruined the relations between two countries but just pick natural enemies so as not to feel too bad.

Sadly my copy hasn't arrived yet

I just wanted to ask about this "grow to a GP and you'll be released" thing:
Has anyone expirenced this yet what happens then if you are the overlord of this power? Do you get a message, a chance to say "no, you little bastards cannot be free" and fight a war over it ...?

I fear the situation that I make for example the Sicilies as puppet in the early game and in the late game when I am close to world domination this puppet will become "great power" because of the lack of compettition and will be magically freed :(
I hope you understand what I mean. And the second question would be if it can be modded that satelites never become great powers to avoid that.

Or pick a land locked nation that is nowhere near the other. So, for example, Tibet. What does the US care if a bunch of fascist Buddhists hate them?

Perfect idea, by the way. Will definitely do this with my inevitable Ireland playthrough. Thanks :D

From what I can tell, no, there's no way to go to war over a satellite becoming a GP. The best way would be to simply undermine their ability to get there. For example, declaring a war on a nation close to them, then letting them get the brunt of it. Could take an infamy hit, but if you really want that satellite...

From my experience as the satellite, it basically just said 'Congratulations, you are now a Great Power!' and I was no longer a satellite.

Then it is event-driven and modable ... I'll look into it if I (finally) get my copy. THX

For sure. I was number 3 in the world for a few months before I finally was welcomed into the big leagues. Could completely remove the event, but that wouldn't be very good for world progression either. You'd probably have better luck working it out than I would

Good luck on getting the copy :D Most fun I've had since EU3, so I think it'll be a game that will suck a few weeks out of my life at a time. Hopefully, at least ;)

Just bear in mind that when you load GB and release IRE as satelite, Ireland will have no cash. So it's a bit tricky to get things going :)
