It seemed oh so simple in HOI2...

Now, from what I can decipher from the somewhat misaligned event-requirement popup on the Diplomacy Screen, I need the Following:

Code:
Austria Must Be:
-At Peace
-A Member of the Axis Faction

One of (or both):
-NSDAP has 40 Party Organization in Austria
-'Political Crisis' Modifier is Active in Austria

[B]AND[/B]

One of (or both):
-Reoccupation of the Rhineland has Occurred
-The Year is after 1938

Obviously that's not exactly what the event looks like in the game's coding, but that's a simpler representation of it. I understand what most of that means, but I'm at a total loss on how to achieve it.

Austria is currently at peace, and is very nearly fully aligned with me (Germany). I may have to lower their neutrality before they'll join me though, or else wait for both Britain and France's Threat level to rise high enough.

The part that confuses me is the part about the Nazi Party in Austria. Yeah, I know how to support my own party through espionage, but I've been doing that from Jan. 1, 1936, and i'm really only fluctuating between 0 and 8% support. I have no idea how to get to 40% before 1938 if I can't even get to 10 by 1937.

The other option is to somehow trigger the 'Political Crisis in Austria', but I have absolutely no idea about how to do that. My best guess tells me that I need to somehow put the ruling party into the minority, but once again, my espionage is not cutting it, and I don't know what else to do. I think really I could put more Leadership into Espionage, but I'm already using 8.8, and making 0.44 spies daily. I've had 10 spies in UK, France and Austria since February 1936, raising threat in the allies and trying to promote my own party in Austria.

So what am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for your help!

NOT a member of any faction.

Do not let them join any faction, including yours.

Ignore that pie-chart... it displays only Popularity, and you'll be triggering the decision via Organization anyway. The pie-chart is not a factor.

Just keep them diplomatically isolated, and keep using "Support Our Party" on them. You should trigger the decision before mid-summer 1937.

If you are in no hurry to annex them you can wait until 1938, and they usually get eligible for Anschluss without any spies working them.
If you are in a hurry support your party there as Blu said, and "Reoccupation of Rhineland" might speed things up

If the misleading event-requirement pop-up bothers you, go into /decisions, open the AnschlussOfAustria file in Notepad, and change the line:

is_in_any_faction = no

to read:

not = { is_in_any_faction = yes }

That means exactly the same thing, but it will straighten out the pop-up for you.

You might want to copy-and-paste a backup of that file onto your desktop first, before changing it... although it would take a real klutz to screw up a simple edit like that.

Much appreciated. I'll try all of this in a bit when I fire the game back up. It probably would have ended up working out one way or another. There's no way I would have had their neutrality low enough to join the axis before they were eligible for Anschluss. But thanks for the quick reply anyway!

Make sure that you put in the blank spaces... everything that isn't joined_together_by_underlines gets blank spaces on each side of it.

Gotcha, I couldn't remember if the spaces mattered in HOI2's code, which I was fairly familiar with, but your advice is duly noted. :)

I assume this will be in 1.2
