So Brittany has declared independence from England and Russia. I kinda want to keep them around, just because I like Brittany.

Now, I can declare war on England and Russia, and that lets me kick them around so they can't attack Brittany, but what can I do to encourage them to sign a peace with Brittany?

It's a general question, too. A lot of times I wish I could do more for brave nations declaring independence, but the instant war and no way to insert myself into the action makes things difficult.

I have no idea what terms I could search on to find where this has been discussed already. :(

You can always support their cause by giving finantial aid, lol. (when you give gift of state to ai, does the ai get that money??) or you can try get in an alliance with brittany and fight england. Or mess around in a save game giving them alot of money or troops. Too bad there isn't an option like Victoria where you can give them money or techs, hopefully it will be added in EU3.

For vassalization, "The target country must be at peace." And Brittany has joined my alliance... that doesn't include me on her existing wars. It doesn't even give me CB on her aggressors.

And I have been giving her money, she spends it poorly.

So far, I've just gained MA and parked over 100000 troops in her provinces. They eat all the food, and the AI retreats because it has no supply. It's keeping her unconquered, but it doesn't encourage them to ever make peace.

And... it's expensive building that many infantry to go boozing and whoring in Brittany.

If you have great deal of excess cash, you can try funding them to the point that they have enough money to offer a really generous peace settlement.

Vassalization may be achieved by war ; the peace-requirement is only for diplo-vassalizations.

And apart of giving lavish sums of cash to the underdog or joining him in the war, or DoWing its enemies to weaken them, I don't see what you could do.

Gain Mil-access to Brittany, then send large quantities of troops to the places England/Russia is sieging, to increase their attrition perhaps?

You could send WARNINGS to all countries you don´t want to wage war and GUARANTESSE to all those brave countries you mentioned you would want to stay alive - at least you will have the feeling that you did something

Yes, guaranteeing Brittany is all you really can do. I don't know if it actually makes AI nations less likely to attack or is just there to give you an excuse to attack the attacker... having said that, I remember having my independence guaranteed by AI nations when I played little Wallachia.

If you invite them to your alliance you don't join their war vs ENG and RUS. However, if they invite you to their alliance you do join. So you need to get rid of your current allies (including Britanny if they are in your alliance) and then get relations with Britanny to +200. Eventually they'll invite you into their alliance, and once you get some war score for them they will make peace.
