I generally play as the UK,Prussia/Germany, the CSA or Austria, and i have a hell of a time encouraging anyone to move to Africa-even as the UK, I struggle to increase the British population of what i view as one of my most important and as such well cared for and developed colonies, South Africa.....any tips?

Afaik, high taxes and full RGOs (with unemployed pops) are the key to have your homeland pops migrate to colonies.
Closing RGOs doesn't do the trick unfortunately.

Pretty much this.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Dixie and Yankee pops to migrate to Africa. Those are short-range pops that don't like leaving home.

From the European countries, you might be able to persuade some of your farmers and laborers to move by not expanding RGOs and filling them up with pops by splitting them as soon as they exceed 40k. Extremely high taxes may not be necessary, but perhaps 50% or so might do the trick ok without driving them to America.;)

Certainly don't enact any social reforms. That would be somewhat counter-productive, in my opinion. It may not hurt or help either way, but I would avoid it until someone could prove me wrong.

Then, it's just a matter of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.

All these tips are for playing Revolutions.

It may just be my imagination, but having some healthcare usually keeps those pops from emigrating out of the country altogether. That may help keep them in the country, just not on the mainland... Potentially. I haven't tested it fully myself, so I can't guarantee anything.

It's tricky, from my experience its a crap shoot. In my Britain game, my British and Irish pops go everywhere it seems but Africa. I've got alot of Irish in the Carribean. British continue to go to Australia and New Zealand. Yet before I had an unexpected game crash, they started flooding Kenya. I had British up to about 25% of the population there, then my game crashed and upon reloading they never went there again.

It also helps if you keep open resources in Afrika.

For example getting a Lassie Fraze with Full Citizenship into power means you can promote all native populations into officers*which is more useful then soldiers* so they sit there giving you a leader boost and nothing else, and then the pops start FLOWING in.

In one of my games where I played as Austria and kept oppressive (absolute) monarchy which didn't allow any political reforms till the end of the game, I didn't have any problem at all to encourgage migration to my African colonies. In fact people did seem to be rather happy to leave the European Austria.

Although real reason for it must have been my high taxation, lack of social reforms and government policy which didn't allow me to build factories (and Austrian capitalists were bit lazy in that front).
