You can also control game speed at the options menu. (Menu at the bottom left), and you can pause the game by clicking the little clock near the date.

playing with pause is essential for a good campaign. When nothing happens, it is useless to go on very slow to see your bailiffs being promoted to tax collectors. I usually go on above normal all the time, in the beginning even at fast or very fast, with my left hand always on the pause button.

I think the Pause key is on the right side on pretty much all keyboards worldwide.

But the keyboard doesn't matter. The real question is whether you are right or left-handed. If you are right-handed, you keep your left hand on the pause key because your right hand is occupied with the mouse.
