How do I assign a proper commander to army groups of 25 divisions or more?

With the new patch, field marshals work differently so I'm not sure how I can assign a commander to armies that have more than 24 divisions in them. I guessed that the logical way would be to assign them with no general, but put them under a field marshal but when there is combat, it says on the combat screen that no commander is assigned to the army so I'm not sure if I'm getting the buffs from the field marshal. Can someone please clarify this?

Is there no way to use old Field Marshal only army group? As i find the new system does not work well with large fronts, like russia where i am trying to squeeze in 300 divisions, 15 separate Generals under 3 FM is crazy to control and they dont seam to be effective pushing forward or at covering the whole front line (they keep leaving gaps for the enemy to move in)

I miss the old field marshal being able to command one front, I wish they still allowed that. Technically I think that armies with no general assigned to it should be commanded by the fieldmarshal so we can have the old way of the fieldmarshal being able to command an unlimited amount of armies but that's just my opinion...

Field marshals still able to command one front. You can put 5 field armies under them, which is around 120 division. I can't imagine why would you need more under one fm.

I find the current system more logical and realistic. If you want to do with this many troops, you can just make 3 front lines (upper, middle, lower or something). During the Barbarossa the Soviet army had around 6 fronts (North, Northwest, West, Southwest, South...and at least one more, but I don't remember its name.)

I only really find garrisoning a pain in the new system (in terms of capacity). I don't like how the garrison command works so prefer to place them manually but that means I can only support 24 divisions with my garrison commander.

Although the new system (WTT) isn't quite as good as the CoC from HoI3, I still think that it simulates army organization way better than the original Hoi IV and is way more enjoyable.

Besides that, you can now assign front lines to your field marshals, who will then assign his armies to different parts of his front. That way you won't have to assign each army individually.

I've tried this system, and its terrible at adjusting to how the frontlne changes with all the jabs and encirclement going on since these automatic plans drawn by field marshals causes a lot of confusion reassigning troops all over the front, in my opinion it was a lot less messy when I just assigned generals on specific sections of the front manually or had one field marshal in charge of the entire line so they don't just deploy a general in the south back to the north when you re-assign the front due to changed which happened with the battles.

The system is far from perfect, I agree, but it is a change in the good direction. I met some weird stuff with my fronts when they are moving, but nothing serious, but I have to add I like to do manual adjustments to my fronts, I rarely let the AI to go with them, it is kind of an immersion thing for me.

I don't actually understand this. This point is sometimes raised, but I still don't.
I was playing China. In the end I had 624 divisions (yeah, not so many, but I stayed on limited conscription because roleplay, immersion and economy). Some of them were united in Army Groups for 72+ divisions, each under Field Marshal and with separate generals on every army. Until I fought against minors I just gave this army united order. I didn't tried to control separate generals as separate generals - I make full order for Army Group, with exception of mine tank storm groups (who got separate orders about blitzing).
That actually went nice for me on four-front (India, Middle East, Siberia, Turkestan) fight against Soviets with a lot of breakthroughs. I started to do it manual in the end of war, when I just run my mobile divisions without any plans or covering flanks for the VPs (it was run against USA), and even then AI generally did good work in closing holes I created.

Does it mean we have to deal with a poor garrison order (plan so ?) if we want to put more than 24 div under a general commander because we can't do that with a field marshal anymore ?
No. You can make one garrison order for full army group (and it can be without actual FM), that gives you 72*5=360 divisions on same order (I actually stayed in 120, with every army being 24, because I thought I could actually use them if things go south; things never did). One such order allowed me to cover full Japan at once.

You should always put the troops under a general even if you have more than 24 divisions. The "penalty" is for the bonus from generals that you receive. So for example, when you have 400 divisions, you'll get 100% penalty, but you'll still end up getting like "+7% from Commander Skill" if you're using a good general. Also, without a general leading the troops, you can't pick a good tactic in any battle, which is a PAIN.

This is the best comprise I've found...until they eventually fix this mess of a system.

If you keep a general in combat while commanding 24 units, he will eventually be able to command an additional 6, for a total of 30.
It's not much, but it helps if your best generals can command more units.

I should admit, I tried to get this trait on my playthrough. Every war I fight I had one particular general with 24 units on his command.
He got, I thing, 5 or 6 different traits, but Staffer one is leveling too slow.

I think currently the maximum earned traits you can get is 6, but you can assign another 5.

I think currently the maximum earned traits you can get is 6, but you can assign another 5.
It's quite possible (and I suspected something like that), but still I couldn't take Staffer in this six. And I really tried.

Its not really an issue to assign a general to every group for major countries for garrisons, but for minor countries this is a huge pain as you don't have many generals to begin with...
For minor countries you don't need a lot of political power for any other use, right? I mean, for China it's a main currency - you use it for building slots, for support in provinces, for reforming government, for force loans, for, well, everything.
And actually as a minor country do you need more then 72 provinces (one general/field marshal) covered often?
