How do factions work?

I am sure this question has been asked many times. But when searching the forum I only find hundreds of posts complaining about factions. I can´t find any threads where factions are discussed and explained.

I have noticed vassals tend to leave a faction if relations get over 80. But what else makes a vassal join or leave a faction? What is the role of the faction leader? If I kill him someone else will take his place. Is there no way to disband a faction completely? How do factions work and is it explained somewhere? Is there even a manual for the expansion?

Vassals create or join factions if their opinion of you is less then 80. So the primary way to stop the factions would be to increase vassal opinion. Your spymaster also has a new mission where he can swing opinion of faction members in your favor. Think it has a good success percent as well for the spymaster mission.

Vassal's can start a faction for pretenders who have Succession CB's, different crown laws desires, claims they have against your primary titles etc.

The faction leader starts it and once it is at 100% they can launch. And there is a good chance they get a spawned army that doesn't suffer attrition to help them in their war.

Starting a faction and being in a faction is not an imprisonable offense. So if you thrown a faction leader into prison without a reason you will just suffer more negative vassal opinion. You would have to get him excommunicated or use your chaplains mission to find heretic nobles. You get the faction leader declared a heretic, kind of random, that is a free imprison and revoke titles.

Most effective way is using your new spymaster mission and just getting the vassal to like you more. Gifts, honorary titles, tutor offspring, etc/

How do you join a faction?

I am playing as a William the Conqueror descendant, and while I'm the King of England, I am also a Duke of sorts in France. There's faction to put me on the throne of France, which I would like to join, if possible, but I can't figure out how to do it.

You can only join factions if you are not liege.And as far as I know outsiders aren't allowed in.

Thus if your in England realm, you can't join a Faction in realm of France.Unless your both under the Same Empire level title.

Even if you're a Duke in France too? So a French Duke that also happens to be the King of England cannot join any french factions?

I notice that you cant declare war on someone if he has an hostage from your close kind. So what about independance war ? Hostages could block the desire to wage a war?
