Oh I just noted that you precisely wanted legendary origins and no historical crap
Well, then I'll put something else.
The legendary creator of the Catalan nation was the Frank knight Otger, lord of Cataló (a castle in Gascoigne). He was wounded in a battle in the Pyrenees with the Moors and hided in a cave to cure his wounds. The animals of the forest saw him and helped him bringing fruits of the forest and offering its own milk to the wounded knight. Then, when he was fully restored he decided that he would liberate from the Saracenes the land that helped him. He arose and played his horn. The sound reached everywhere, and soon all the scattered nobles and knights heard it and took arms to assemble themselves around Otger. They were leaded by nine barons, who would then became the nine founding baronies of Catalonia. They battled the Moors and conquered what is known as "Elder Catalonia" (all the part south of Perpinyà and north of Barcelona).
There are some historical traces of the characters involved, but of course reality mixes with myth.
The conquest of Barcelona, which is the other pivotal point of the creation of Catalonia, also has his legend. The Christians, led by Louis the Pietous (son of Charles the Great) besieged Barcelona, but they weren't able to take it, since it was protected by a powerful moorish giant. Word of the siege arrived to a peaceful giant called Farell the Strong who inhabited the woods of center Catalonia, who then learned that Barcelona was in hands of the Saracenes (yeah, he was an informed fella
). He didn't like it, and resolved to help the Christians, taking a 4-metres tall pine as weapon. He crossed all the way to Barcelona, and the people who saw it sang and danced in joy. He went to the city and challenged the Giant of the City to a duel to see who was stronger. The armies retired and left room for the two mighty giants to battle. The Christian Giant defeated the Giant of the City and Barcelona was finally taken by the Franks. This myth is quite popular, since it sprang a kid's song which is probably the most popular one in Catalonia (El Gegant del Pí) and the act of the liberation of Barcelona is represented in the Festivities of each village of Catalonia, with 5-metres tall figures representing the giants that dance, representing the battle. Yeah, you guessed it, I love this one
