Oh I just noted that you precisely wanted legendary origins and no historical crap :D

Well, then I'll put something else.

The legendary creator of the Catalan nation was the Frank knight Otger, lord of Cataló (a castle in Gascoigne). He was wounded in a battle in the Pyrenees with the Moors and hided in a cave to cure his wounds. The animals of the forest saw him and helped him bringing fruits of the forest and offering its own milk to the wounded knight. Then, when he was fully restored he decided that he would liberate from the Saracenes the land that helped him. He arose and played his horn. The sound reached everywhere, and soon all the scattered nobles and knights heard it and took arms to assemble themselves around Otger. They were leaded by nine barons, who would then became the nine founding baronies of Catalonia. They battled the Moors and conquered what is known as "Elder Catalonia" (all the part south of Perpinyà and north of Barcelona).

There are some historical traces of the characters involved, but of course reality mixes with myth.

The conquest of Barcelona, which is the other pivotal point of the creation of Catalonia, also has his legend. The Christians, led by Louis the Pietous (son of Charles the Great) besieged Barcelona, but they weren't able to take it, since it was protected by a powerful moorish giant. Word of the siege arrived to a peaceful giant called Farell the Strong who inhabited the woods of center Catalonia, who then learned that Barcelona was in hands of the Saracenes (yeah, he was an informed fella :p). He didn't like it, and resolved to help the Christians, taking a 4-metres tall pine as weapon. He crossed all the way to Barcelona, and the people who saw it sang and danced in joy. He went to the city and challenged the Giant of the City to a duel to see who was stronger. The armies retired and left room for the two mighty giants to battle. The Christian Giant defeated the Giant of the City and Barcelona was finally taken by the Franks. This myth is quite popular, since it sprang a kid's song which is probably the most popular one in Catalonia (El Gegant del Pí) and the act of the liberation of Barcelona is represented in the Festivities of each village of Catalonia, with 5-metres tall figures representing the giants that dance, representing the battle. Yeah, you guessed it, I love this one :p

But I will check in my library.
What about Eddan, maybe there is something there?

My country is too young to have legends like the others, but here is a myth that Canadians like to spread about the formation of their country:

3 British colonies decided to unite themselves and form Canada with a representative government because they felt distinct from the British and they felt they would be better served by being united on the same continent.

The truth is there was a lot of money to be made with the "iron horse" and quite surpringly  our most (if not all) founding fathers were shareholders of the railroad company ;)

I thought the legend went something like this. According to a francophone friend of mine from Quebec, all English-speaking kids in Anglo Canada are taught the following story in school about how Canada came to be:

"The brave general Wolfe heroically scaled the cliffs below the Plains of Abraham to attack the cowardly French, who through their sheer perversity refused to acknowledge that 'God was an Englishman'. True to their inherently undisciplined behaviour, the French rabble that laughably called itself an army left off eating frogs and snails long enough to pretend to attack the stalwart English troops. Needless to say, they immediately fled at the mere sight of the British. While Brave general Wolfe unfortunately was killed by the only shot fired by the French (an accident, as a Frenchman dropped his musket as he ran screaming for his mother), the pusulanimous general Montcalm dropped dead at same time from a heart attack brought on by sheer terror.

The survivors thought to distract the British soldiers through the device of poxed-up whores specially brought by the ship-load from Paris as a secret weapon. Fortunately, the clever British saw through this trick, and made use of the wives and daughters of the French colonists instead. Naturally, these women were more than happy to provide their services to REAL men for a change.

The few survivors of the French army finally made it back to Paris, where they erected the "Arc de Capitulation" to celebrate their worthlessness compared to the English." :D :D :D

But I'm not asking about the true stories but legends.

For example:
There were three brothers: Lech, Czech and Rus.
They lived together but one day they decided to split up.
Rus went east and created Russia.
Czech went south and established Czech's counrty.
Lech went north and after quite long ramble saw an eagle and it's nest. He thought: "Yes, this is a place where I should build a town and stay for the rest of my life". And he did it. This is the beginning of Gniezno (you may say Nestlin :)). You know: Berlin - der Bar (a bear); Nestlin (Gniazdo - a nest))- the first Polish capital and the beginning of Poland as a country.
And that's why Poland has an eagle as natonal emblem.

Have you any stories about your countries?
Because the oldest emblem of Poland was a chicken we can also explain our national polish pride: laziness (for those who still don`t get it: Lech didn`t have to go that far in seach of a nest)

I've checked Eddan and according to the greatest masterpiece in world litterature. The asar came from the steppes in east to Scandinavia and Odin went to Uppsala and ruled Svitjod. So that is true Sweden was founden by gods and not humans.

well, since there are no legents for all the hellenes /greeks but only tribal im gonna tell the "re-creation" of humans.
After the waters of the 4th flood disapear only two humans survived , Defkalionas and Pyra, they ask zews what to do in order to create humanity again, god tell them to take two baskets and put stones inside, then to walk streight ahead holding a basket each and throw the stones behind, so Defkalionas's stones creat men and Pyra's women.

Well, I can explain the names of Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore...

First of all, Hong Kong:
"Heung Gong" in Cantonese means "Fragrant Harbour", from the fact that many fragrant woods were found in Hong Kong. Of course, the fragrance comes from a different source now...

Macau:
The bay was called "A Ma Gau", bay of the Goddess A Ma. The Portueguese took the name to be Macau.

Singapore:
A young prince, fleeing from the destruction of Palembang (IIRC), landed in Singapore in the 13th century or so. Despite being hunted for by Javans, he decided to take a hunting trop for tigers. To his surprise, leapt something out of a bush that looked remarkably like a lion. In Malay, Singapura means "Lion City", despite there being no lions there. :D

And of course, the creation story of my Asian dictatorship will be most exciting... ;)

Some sources assign eagle's nest finding not to Lech but to Piast Kolodziej. As far as I remember that version of a legend is told in "Stara Basn" by Kraszewski. it is also probably little closer to reality as it seems that Gniezno was not the first capital of Poland (or should I say the country of Polan tribe).

Hm, you have forgotten about Duke Popiel, eaten by mice... :)

Dear friend in early 16th century was already the kingdom created since some 5-300 years. He was the reconstructor and creator of the early modern state as the Tudors in England. And the landtaking was at least 2000 years earlier.

Rudbeck had (almost) right about the early Swedish history :D

Here is almost exactly what I learned in Kindergarten (age 5) about the founding of the country of America.
My source is a coloring book we had as our textbook ;)

"Once upon a time, the British were mean to some Christians, so they left to go to the New World and make America. They were called the Pilgrims. They landed on Plymouth Rock [They left Plymouth and reached Plymouth, how lucky! (Ed)]When they got here, they taught the indians many things. The Indians gave the Pilgrims food on Thanksgiving so everyone could live in peace. The Indians taught the Pilgrims to put a fish next to every seed of corn to make it grow.
After that, the British made the Americans pay taxes, which is bad. So the Americans threw all the tea into Boston Harbor dressed as Indians. This made the British mad, because the British like tea.
The Americans fought the British at Bunker Hill and won. So the British gave up and the Americans made America. They were nice to everybody and gave everyone freedom.

Um, I feel dirty writing that ;)

O.

This paragraph made me fall off my chair, now the Brittons didn't set America free because they were pissed they mistreated tea so much :D
