Is there any single particular AAR that you would recommend to a newbie (relatively speaking, been playing and reading here for a little while) who is starting to get interested in WC?

I agree wholeheartedly with Stonewall. Check out the england one, and then if you want some more, go to EU1 AARchives and OscAARs. It was the first attempt at a libraary, so it's got a whole lot of good AARs to pick from.

I read a review from the web about this game. I like to play history/war games too...(like colonization and l'emperer). But I didnt buy it right away because I still got too many games to finish. When I finally wanted to buy it...I found a real cheap one from the web for $1.49 (maybe $1.99) :D

I installed the game...and try to play some scenario (the first one is the hanseatic league where you have to control 3 trade centers). And you know what...I sat there didnt know what to do for like 10 minutes. Just looking at a list of all military alliances out there gave me a headache :p So I quited and tried a fantasy game ( the one that you start with one province) for a while. Worst time spent :( I should have dove right in and tried the GC.

To tell the truth, my history about this period in Europe is almost nil. So the game also doubles as a starting point for my history research too :)

Let me see. How did I find EU? Oh yeah! I was actually running a search to help me remember the name of a new strategy game I was wanting to buy, I will not say which one. Got off on a tangent, something I'm rather famous for doing I'm proud to say, and started looking at all the reviews that I managed to dredge up. Located reviews of EU & EUII, not necessarily good ones I might add, but the review left a bad taste in my mouth. Reviewers who like to gripe about a lack of graphics do not necessarily impress me, you might say. I look for games with content and strategic playability more than flash and dazzle, if you know what I mean. Checked out the Paradox web site. Liked what I saw. The forums are excellent, and remind me of the support that Stars! used to receive (see Question from an Oldtimer post). Did another internet search and located EU & EUII in local stores. Bought EUI because my current system cannot handle EUII or HOI right now.

What was the name of that game I was looking for? :p

EUI cost me $9.99 (American), but I am willing to pay full price for the other two games. If you knew just how cheap I really was, that statement would be a testement in itself.

Great job Paradox!

Was walking in a library, just brought Blade Runner DVD for my father's christmas and wanted to buy Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" for my mother. In the little electronic's corner of the store I found this crappy-looking game at 15 Euros. The concept behind it looked neat, though, and I was a great fan of this kind of strategy (thanks Shogun) so I decided I'd give it a try.

First hours I thought I'd wasted my money. Then, as I understood how to play, it picked up.

I read an artichle by the swedish historian and bookwriter Peter Englund. In that artichle he described a game called Europa Universalis and called it one of the best historical strategy games he ever played. He said that many strategy games gets boring as you have micromanage every single province/city/unit but in EU the player doesnt have micromanage but can focus on the overall strategy instead. AS im a fan of Peter Englunds books I, of course, did a search on altavista after this "amazing" game... and found it :)

I had seen the game in stores but looking at the screenshots on the back of the box it seemed acutely boring.

When I read the article you mention I had to change my mind 180 degrees and buy it. This was fully well knowing that P-dox had just announced EU2, but I thought that it could take a while..

I'm happy :)

I was browsing Amazon.com, and noticed it in the customors who bought this also bought... and thought it looked interesting. Having no money, I didn't buy it then. I found the fora in short order and lurked, reading the AARs. This was after EU2 came out, so I decided I would get that. Then, just over a year ago (April 28th 2002) I registered so that I could post in one of the AARs I was paying close attention to. Then a month or two later, I directed my brother to order EU2 from Amazon while I was at the library. We were each to pay half. He inadvertantly ordered EU1. He hated it, but I liked it, and continued to play. His hatred expanded to Paradox in general and takes every opportunity to insult them in some way.
