I've played the board game, and heard of the computer version on the World in Flames discussion group. When I saw it in the store for ~US$30 (now I feel robbed! ) I figured I could waste that much if it turned out I didn't like it. Now I lose sleep fighting BB wars:D . Probably the biggest difference between the two: in the board game only Russia and Turkey can annex the capital province of another country.

I found the game when I was at a Babbages looking for Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. I saw the game box and decided that it looked really cool and picked up both games. I paid $39.99 for it back then. And in all honesty, it was the best forty bucks I ever spent on a game.

It took me about a week and a half to find the forums, which completely blew me away. Every game I've bought since, I've checked their webpages for foirums and such, and have always been dissappointed. But then again, I think I've been spoiled here. :)

I found it similarly, with a twist. Was trapped in a mall in Memphis (Dec 2002) with my girlfriend, went into the EB there, and as I was looking around, she saw EU behind me and went "Isn't this the kind of game that you'd be interested in?" It was 10 bucks, she needed a birthday present for me...and the rest is history. I went to the net and researched some first, but in the end, 10 bucks of someone else's money was definately worth it to see how the game is. She sowed the seeds of her own destruction that day. :D The funny thing is, Christmas was about two weeks later, and my parents got me Civ 3. I still haven't installed it.

My great-uncle had come into town -- er, Io -- and was feeling generous and got me Empire Earth and my sister this other game. Well, Empire Earth didn't work, so he brought it back and got EU. It didn't work either, but by the time I found that out, he had left, and I didn't have the time to bring it back. So, it sat on the desk for ~6 months, until we got a new computer. I installed it, and *BOOM*! Best game I ever played. I missed so much those 6 months!!!!!

btw, I installed it b/c of this forum, specifically Ariel's England AAR.

I heard about it from my brother-in-law, he's a Mediaeval history buff, and had heard about it of the net in early 2001.. He found the forums, and had printed off a hard copy of Grevens Papal States AAR. In five chapters! It seemed less like a computer game, more like a way to create alternative histories.

He got a copy straight away, but I waited because I was still immersed in Railway Tycoon 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon. I finally got my copy of EU mid-2002, and played almost nothing else for 6 months.

welcome first post, btw!

Yes she is, I try to play it off as appreciating her by playing "her" game. She doesn't buy it, but that's ok, she's a bookworm and tends to read while I play. :D

Thanks.

Speaking of printing out aars, I think that some of the better aars could probably be sold as novels! That'd be really cool...

Morpheus, I know you're a major advocate of EU and tend to be anti-EU2, but if you want some really really really good reads, check out the EU2 AAR sections about the Free Company. It will blow your mind how good some of the writing is. The EU AAR's are awesome, but the whole concept of an AAR has been rewritten in the EU2 section. BTW, the best EU1 AAR I ever read was Ariel's English AAR. I loaded that thing up everyday for a long time to see new posts and such.

JM, the best AAR I've read in EU1 was Ariel's England AAR. It came pretty close to WC if I remember correctly and seeing as how the thing is over 1100 posts long, you may want to schedule a week or two reading it. Although, it gets easier to read as you go if you ignore the posts of the people chiming in with advice and tips. But, thats one of the best parts of the AAR, the fact that it became interactive half-way through. It really was a pretty revolutionary way to do things.

Anyway, hope that helps. If you had trouble finding the Ariel AAR, I have posted a link here for you:

I read an artichle by the swedish historian and bookwriter Peter Englund. In that artichle he described a game called Europa Universalis and called it one of the best historical strategy games he ever played. He said that many strategy games gets boring as you have micromanage every single province/city/unit but in EU the player doesnt have micromanage but can focus on the overall strategy instead. AS im a fan of Peter Englunds books I, of course, did a search on altavista after this "amazing" game... and found it :)
