I am playing 5.1. I have conquered many Japanese Daymio provinces and Kyoto. However. It seems that I cannot ask any provinces from the Daymios direct as I cannot negotiate with them nor from Japan. The only possible waay it seems is to ask them from Ming at double the badpoints.
Is there no other way?

when japan is guaranteed by ming/manchu/korea etc, you have to go to war with the guarantor(s) separately-this will ensure that japan remains alliance leader, allowing you to demand provinces from them in the usual way.

Thanks for yyour quick response.
So if Japan is leader of its war I can ask provinces of the Daimyos for say 2 badboy with an imperial CB rather than 4BB?
Still, this requires to conquer most of eastern asia before you can even think of Japan. In my game I own most of China, the Ming are reduced to 10 inland provinces and yet they became leader of the Japanese side of my war.

No it doesn't. You just need to be able to fight Ming to a standstill while you beat up the Daimyoswarm, which really isn't that hard for a Western group country.

thats because japan is a OPM-you dont need to fight ming etc, just being at war with them will prevent them getting a call to arms from japan.....

Basically, while the game is paused you DoW Japan and then make seperate DoWs against Ming and any other allies or guarantors to ensure Japan is the war leader in that particular war. This is only one of the annoying things about the current state of the shogun and faction systems that make it somewhat painful to play in that part of the world.
