Lack of an heir would be a good first step![]()
Highest dev amongst all partners to become first in line. Leader needs to die without an heir.
Rest is explained in this short guide.

If you look at their rivals France is one of them so they can't be allied. The alliance most likely broke once the Iberian Wedding happened.I see one problem though. They seem allied to France, as France has same dynasty. So to even get same dynasty as them, I suggest that YOU flip dynasty @Spikee78
Disinherit your heir when your ruler gets really old, and pray for trastemara heir.
Problem with that? You will lose emperorship...
But trying to get habsburg on their throne and then force Union will work also.
In this case be patient. There is an event that has good odds of firing that will put a habsburg heir on the spanish throne if you are allied and both have France as rival. Just keep relations high and dont punch France so hard they arent viable as rivals any longer.

I cant quite remember in what timespan the event triggers. But in all my latest Austrian games it has triggered.
For now just help them grow and expand in a different direction.
Both of you are forgetting one of the triggers for the event. France and Castile can't have the same dynasty (the second last trigger in the list on the wiki). However, the screenshot says that France (Charles VIII) has the same dynasty as Castile, which means that the event can't trigger. Not quite correct, you don't need to be allied, you just need a royal marriage. Also whether Austria and Castile rival France doesn't matter, France needs to rival both Austria and Castile
The event fires quite fast once all the triggers are met (Castile also needs a >20 year old king and no heir). You can punch France a bit, if they don't rival you you can remove their rivals (obviously not Castile) in a peace treaty..if you also take land they'll hate you even more and you have a good chance they'll pick you as a rival
