Actually, .ai files ARE text files. Right-click, select "Open with...", and pick Notepad.

But doesn't the file when opened with notepad come in encripted/coded(whatever)...and we cant read it?

Just make sure, if you edit with Notepad, to save it using quotation marks around the file name ("file.ai").
