How can I make a lot of money quickly?

I have 5 years to build up a strong army in preparation for the scripted war on saxony and the widukind revolt. I also need to create an assload of duchy titles so I can bury my vassals. For this I need LOTS of money.

I do not have conquest, and I'm using intrigue focus to help put down factions by killing faction leaders.

I've borrowed from the jews and put a little bit into my retinue as well as building a keep in my capital barony. I still only make 1.30 gold per month.

I do not have conclave, and have no intention of getting it.

Always upgrade your money generating buildings first.

Depending on your DLC, you can borrow money from the Jews, or build your war chest so you can squeeze your peasantry or Clergy.

This was actually the very same scenario that I've tried dozens of times before. The Widukind revolt in particular just comes off as incredibly unfair.... On the one hand, i want to play charlemagne, it seems like it'd be fun... but constantly putting down factions and desperately trying to make money to defend against the cheating computer just isn't fun...

It's pretty gamey but you can use the character finder to generate cash. Filter for males, no title, unmarried, no great house, sort them from oldest to youngest and invite any you can get to your court. If your courtiers die with no heirs you inherit their money, and courtiers can have a surprising amount of money. Doesn't provide anything immediately but you should be able to get a decent amount of money before five years is up if you're lucky.

Couldn't you invite them and then have them killed as well?
Also with way of life choose business focus and there is chance for events to make quick money. 100 debasing currency and another setting up a trading post thing

Could try getting friendly with the Pope provided you have Papal Investiture. Send over your chancellor and chaplain, then ask for some cash when his opinion is high.

It's too early for a retinue if your preparing to invade Saxony.

Plot against your barons in order to inherit their titles and gold

Ally up with Lombardy and the Byzzies and they'll normally swing the war in your favour.
