i'm assuming from the interface that the number of alliances you can hold depends on your diplomacy rating.

what are the thresholds?

i once accepted two alliance proposals at once, while the game was paused, and ended up with both. i've never managed to make this happen sequentially, or since...

You are limited to one alliance, the case you posted is the exception and will indeed get you more than one alliance. An alliance lasts until one of the rulers die, so you can change alliances quite frequently if you are unlucky ;)

Alliances are normally limited to one at a time. The only exception is the way it happened to you, 2 offerings made to you on the same day (then accepting both while pausing the game).

Edit: beaten by Slinky. :)

It is also possible to edit the savegame so that a character has multiple alliances. Also some characters start with multiple alliances in some scenarios. Take 1066, in DVIP or TASS, the English Saxon counts and duke are allied. There are either three or four of them together all allied.
