My question is, how big is the chance that officer dies in combat?

I played a USSR game and Zhukov died in combat. It was upsetting to say the least since he was a field marshal
Yeah, it seems like it happens more frequently than 1 in 4000. I generally play smaller nations and losing a general can be devastating.

That is, 1 in 4000, and it happened to Manstein. Sheer bad luck, @Grahe .

I remember having the same with Crerar during a Canada game. I was pissed off, to say the least.
I suspect Halder killing him in headquarters(he was in the same battle, this is in battle of poland, one of the first battles actually). Right after Mansteins death romel automaticly took over. Poland surendered 20 days after that.

Rising star in german ranks. So what is the chance for a leader to develop skill?

Playing the "Blood and Iron" mod, I had Graziani be killed in action during the 2nd Abbyssinan war, a bit of alternate history I suppose ;).

It's the 1st time I can recall having a commander be killed in combat during any playthrough of mine, modded or vanilla DH full. Was quite suprising as normally I was only ever used to seeing it when i chose the "purge of the army" decision.

I swear the game knows...

I was on Kaiserreich, 1936, having encircled the Maginot Line, and August von Mackensen died on the front. That didn't stop KR from having its military disputes for Germany, so a wounded Mackensen officially retired afterwards.

Rising star in german ranks. So what is the chance for a leader to develop skill?
The skills of the commanders depends on whether they were in combat, normally they have a predetermined skill example 3 of skill, this goes up when the commander enters combat, their experience increases until they level up, then there are the commanders' traits (I think that's what What were you asking, I don't speak English much but I know to a certain extent) these depend on the area where the commander fights, if you have a commander with whom he fights in the desert, he will obtain the "Desert Fox" trait, but not always the commander he gets that trait, there is a certain chance he will get it, there is also the Panzer Leader or something like that, as far as I know not all traits give noticeable bonuses.

Edit :
There are different traits, there are those that I spoke above and others like, defensive doctrine, offensive doctrine, and other traits that depend on the area where the commander fought and if he obtained it or that trait already came with the same commander since historically it was good at defensive or offensive doctrine.

Not low enough sometimes. I once lost Guderian on the first day of WW2 when his division stationed against the Maginot was attacked by the French.

Some commanders just get (possibly historical?) skill boosts and promotions even when not in combat. I am not sure if they are being modified as-is or replaced with a "later model" so to speak. You can really see this if you pay the US where some of the generals and admirals just soar in skill never having seen a single battle (in game anyway).

Anyone else seeing their officers die a lot more than usual? My last German game i lost 5 generals to combat, and one of them was during a paradrop attack (on Denmark, so i didnt lose the 4 paras)
