That is the price we pay for an overhaul and improvement to empire customization. If you don't want to lose them, take notes on your empire designs and remake them with the new system after Banks.

You can copy-paste your custom empires file (which is normally in the folder under Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris) and save it somewhere else, so you can re-use what you've done later. That's what I'll do personally.
Otherwise, the authoritarian/egalitarian ethics will need to replace the former collectivist/individualist ones, and you'll need to add civics.
I don't think that the mods you mention will be broken, they will only be signaled as "outdated" but should probably work fine.


I'm more concerned by the fact that my custom empires won't have dynamic names anymore. It doesn't make sense at all that my custom "Democratic Republic of XXX" stay with that name if it becomes an hegemonic empire.

I'm more concerned by the fact that my custom empires won't have dynamic names anymore. It doesn't make sense at all that my custom "Democratic Republic of XXX" stay with that name if it becomes an hegemonic empire.

Names are still dynamic from what we have seen in the streams. They rely on authority and civic types (that determines government name) to dynamically name empires.

N-thing the advice to save, or take notes on, your custom empires - they may persist in the UI in a playable or unplayable state, but I don't think anyone should count on it. :)

This is exactly what you should do. I have backed up my empires in the same way. Also, take screenshots from the 'empire selection' screen (F12 if you're using Steam) and you'll have images saved automatically to your computer just in case.

Another thing that happens between updates is that the cost of certain traits changes. In this update, 'Talented' is changing, so you'll need to be aware of that and modify those custom empires accordingly.

Speaking of cost changes, you will also be required to spend all of your Ethic points, so if one of your custom empires weren't at the cap, you'll need to change their ethics a bit.

In My Documents > Paradox Interactive > Stellaris, there is a file called user_empire_designs.

That file contains all the details of all your custom empires: species name, custom bio and leader titles, what you picked for portraits/traits/ethos/flags/etc, all of it.

Now, @Wiz has said that updates do not touch that file, nor does checksum see if the file has been altered (though the game does make sure that everything in there follows the rules/limits before it lets you start a game with the empire) but if you want to be 100% sure, you can save a copy of that file in a separate location, and when Banks hits, copy/paste the bios and whatnot into the right places of the new, Civic-based empire so you don't have to remember and retype everything you had put in there in the first place.

Wiz simply said that your empires will still be there as normal. All you have to do is go in and give them civics and they'll be playable and spawn in game (unless disabled). As to your aesthetic mods, they very well may break but that is unfortunately just how it goes with updates. I am sure the modmaker will have it fixed up soon.

Basically, you have to do a little maintenance work to update them and you'll be fine.

Edit: I assume you also have to select an authority type and allocate all ethos points if any are unspent for some reason.

The mods are your least concern, seeing as the mod will update on the same day, or inside small few days, of the release.
As for the custom empires themselves, you will need to edit and re-save them to make sure that they all work properly in new version of the game.

How badly will the changes to government and traits and such F up my empires? I worked really hard on them. To make matters worse, I used a color and icon mod which will probably break when the update comes out...


why not just make a copy of all of your custom empires, write down every single option you chose and when the dlc/patch comes out just remake them again or just go back in and fix things it is not that difficult

Yeah, it seems likely that -- as happens when I install or uninstall mods -- that thoroughly invalid custom empires might be hidden (but remain in the file), those with invalid ship or city styles will need to have those replaced until the mods get updated, and I'll have to fill in new government types for all my creations.

So I'm feeling pretty confident that, aside from some inconvenience, Banks is not going to foreclose on my empires. *Ducks*

They didn't really change any of the traits, and the "new" ethics aren't really very new. None of the traits changed either, except the useless ones got less useless. Just pick the civics that add up to the government type you used to have, and you'll prolly be fine.

Hope your flag mod still works. I bet it will though.
