From the second playthrough video we can see how the armor calculations work. A unit with 6 armor has a 47% damage reduction. That means the formula is almost certainly:
damage reduction = 1*0.9^armor
Which means it follows the planetfall system instead of the age of wonders 3 system.
This is great news as the age of wonders 3 system wasn't very appealing. It led to spamming damage channels, which against units with negative resistances was absolutely devastating.
It will be interesting to see how the model damage reduction will play out in practice though as it does seem as if single entity units could be a bit OP now. Since they do not get damage reductions upon getting models killed.
